Ludwig Alois ("Louis") was born in Austria in 1856, the son of Joseph Mariacher, a farmer, and Theresa Haeer (died in 1922). He first left Austria in 1876 for Rio de Janeiro, reasons unknown, only later to move to Johannesburg, South Africa, where he was a mercenary soldier in the Boer War. His next move was to Dunedin, New Zealand. In 1886, he married Elizabeth Lockwood. Elizabeth, born in London in 1861, came from a family that owned a hotel chain. Louis was a shoemaker with expertise in orthopedic and surgical shoes. He was considered to be one of the best. (Incidentally, his background may relate to the mention earlier of the world famous Mariacher climbing shoes!) He was also known for raising prize bull terriers. He later became the mayor of the New Zealand town where he lived. Then, in 1904, for unknown reasons, he immigrated to Canada.

Louis and Elizabeth had two sons: Rudolph (1890-1961) and Alphonso (1888-1971).

Rudolph had 3 children: Marie Julie, Katherine Elizabeth, and Victor. Victor had two children, Patricia (deceased 2/12/98), who was married to David Short, and Robert Victor (44), who was married to Karen Evers and is now married to Vicki Ross and they have a daughter Lisa born 1998.

Alphonso, like other Mariachers, loved music and was quite an accomplished opera singer. He was also an accomplished athlete and rowed to victory for Vancouver in the 1924 Paris Olympics. He married three times. From his first marriage to Ethel Mary Hodson, he had a son Louis (76). Louis is married to Edna and they have a daughter Marilou (Dupuis) born 8/18/55 and they have an eleven-year old child. From his second marriage to Alice MacKenzie, they had a son Philip. From his thired marriage to Rollande Brisebois, he had a daughter Ann (Antenucci) who was born in 1952 and has three sons: Sean (23), Vincent (16) and Gabriel (15). Ann was widowed 12 years ago. Alphonso and Rollande also have a son, Victor Joseph Emile, who was born in 1955 and has three children: Carolyn Pinto (9/25/80), Tanya Mariacher (5/12/85), and Tyler Mariacher (5/15/88).

(See photos below, first in 1941, and then in 1967.)
