Alpha Delta Pi was founded on May 15, 1851 at Wesleyan Female College in Macon, Georgia. It is the FIRST secret society for college women in the world. Initially, six young women at Wesleyan College (the first college in the world that was chartered for women) founded “The Adelphean Society”. The founders of The Adelphean Society were Eugenia Tucker (Fitzgerald), Ella Pierce (Turner), Otavia Andrew (Rush), Mary Evan (Glass), Sophronia Woodruff (Dews), and Elizabeth Williams (Mitchell). Many years later, with national sororities increasing in number, The Adelphean Society became Alpha Delta Pi.

Alpha Delta Pi has over 200,000 initiates worldwide and over 130 active chapters making it one of the largest sororities in the National Panhellenic Conference. In addition to being chartered as the first secret society for college women, and mother of today's current sorority system, Alpha Delta Pi has led the way to developments in these areas:

  • The first sorority to celebrate its 150 year anniversary!
  • The first sorority to institute a shortened, pre-initiation program, Total Membership Education
  • Establishing the Abigail Davis Fund, funding student grants for ADPi's own members
  • For the 150th Anniversary, donated the largest gift ever to NPC: $150,000
  • First sorority to establish a Foundation specifically for scholarships for collegians and alumnae

    Local History:

Before going national on November 23, 1956, our chapter was a social organization known as the "Revelers". The Revelers sponsor was the late Dr. Setzer. The revelers was the oldest social organization on the Lamar campus. Delta Beta is the 7th chapter formed in Texas, and the 86th in the nation.
