The Blue Shark

(Prionace Glauca)

The blue shark is found in open oceans throughout the tropics and into cooler waters. It migrates regularly through the Atlantic, following the gulf stream to Europe, moving along the African coast, then returning to the Carribean. In the tropics, it can be found in deeper, cooler waters, while in the temperate coastal waters it comes close to the edge of kelp beds, where divers may see it.

The Blue shark has a long, slender body, with two dorsal fins. It has a narrow head; a long, narrow snout; and large black eyes with a white rim. It's teeth are triangular are serrated. The upper body is a bright, indigo blue, making this one of the most beautiful of sharks, while it's underside is white

Reproduction: After a gestation period of 9 to 12 months, females give birth in the open ocean. An average litter size is about 40, but litters of 135 are not completely uncommon.

These sharks are a favorite among divers, as they are seemingly abundant in their numbers.
