If you're single and sexually active, South Carolina is one of the most dangerous places to live. The state of South Carolina has the highest rate of sexually transmitted diseases in the nation, according to the Greenville Council for the Prevention of Teen Pregnancy.

"It's so bad that it is scary," said Christa Guicherit, of AID Upstate. "It scares me what I see when I am out there working."

Abstinence for young people is the only certain way to avoid sexually transmitted diseases, and in Tuesday's State of the Union Address, the president proposed doubling funding for federal programs promoting abstinence.

"We need to keep talking about abstinence, but we also need to keep talking about other options," Guicherit said. "There needs to be more money for more education."

In order for prevention offices like Greenville's to stay open, it is going to cost money.

Right now, that money is coming from two sources -- the federal government and the state government.

"We collaboratively do a lot of things to try and prevent people from (acting in a) risky or high risk behavior," said Maurice Adair of AID Upstate.

Directors at AID Upstate are happy the issue is now in the spotlight.

"It gives me a lot of hope that they are talking about it because talking about it is the first step of solving any problem," Guicherit said.

South Carolina also ranks in the top ten for new cases of HIV.
