Buttermilk Biscuits

2 cups all-purpose flour 1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt 3 tbsp shortening or butter
1/2 tsp baking soda
Combine flour, salt, soda, and baking powder; cut in shortening until mixture resembles course meal. Stir in enough buttermilk to make a soft dough. Turn dough out onto a floured surface; roll to 1/2-inch thickness, and cut with floured biscuit cutter. Bake at 400º for 12 to 15 minutes. Yield 12 to 16 biscuits.
