Space missions to Planets
Russians:
Venus- The strong Russians have decided to land on Venus now, but the Americans decided that they were going to compete with the Russians to land first on Venus. The Russians and Americans launched rockets to Venus in 1961 and 1962 respectively but both of them failed. The first soft landing on Venus was done by the Soviets. Verera 7 landed on Venus in 1970 and sent observation data back to earth.
Americans:
Mars- The Russians attempted to launch probes to Mars, but they didn’t achieve much success. The Americans, however, launched seven successful missions to take pictures of Mars and make other observations. Such probes were the Viking probes 1 and 2, launched in 1975. There was an attempt to search for living organisms on the Martian land, but no living organism was found, but the survey was a big achievement.
Significance:
The American victory to send men on the moon didn’t stop the Soviets. They managed to beat America to Venus, but the Americans responded by sending the first probes to Mars. Even though the Americans had reached to the moon before the Russians did, the Russians thought that the competition hasn’t ended yet, but to many Americans, their accomplishment to the moon ended the Space Race.
