The space twins were started back in the day by Brian and his former girlfriend.
They didn't have money to go out and do stuff, so they would sit around and write songs,
and eventually, they became the space twins. When the band's 7" "no show" was recorded,
the band consisted of Brian bell, Susan fox, and Mike Elliot. As of now, the band consists
of Brian bell, Glenn and Tim Maloof, and Mike Elliott. The space twins' first release,
the no show 7" vinyl: No show (original version) A brief history (original version)
Take my place Notes: this single was released on world domination records in 1994.
When this was recorded, the space twins consisted of Brian, Susan and Mike. Brian described
this single as having a "space-rock" type sound. This sound was somewhat abandoned for
the later songs performed by the band, however, the space theme remained.
Interesting facts: a line in "no show" has Brian singing about his favorite mammal,
the wooly mammoth. Here's the story behind this line: when Brian's family was living
in Iowa City, there was a stuffed wooly mammoth in a building on the campus his father
was teaching at at the time. When Brian was 2 or 3 years old, he was totally
fascinated by it.

*Note*-- this single is no longer available for sale, except on Ebay in RARE occurences
The new space twins demo has been completed, and Brian has sent copies out to record
companies. The demo contains the following songs:
Rings of Saturn
Goddess of love
Osaka aqua bus
A brief history
TV, music, and candy
No show
notes: "no show" and "a brief history" also appeared on their 7", but these versions are
different. The intro to "no show" is very different from the one on the 7". "a brief history"
has keyboards and pianos added into the beginning.

Interesting facts: the song
"Osaka aqua bus" shows the influence weezer's tour in Japan had on Brian. Some of the lyrics
deal with the large amounts of pollution Brian encountered during weezer's stay in Japan.

Other songs played by the space twins:
Vacation states - a song about how much Brian hated
going on road trips and how he wish the travel agent would book him a nice vacation
Here comes the sun - not a Beatles cover, it's about flying through outer space
My love - a love song (obviously)
Smells like ... hot dogs - a song about how Brian hates the summer
Thoughts of lust - Brian does not mind the thoughts of lust
The space twins theme song - a song about the space twins (little green men attached at the
hip and flying through space) the lyrics are on my page, this song will almost definitely
never be released. Fun fact: on the weezer cat's paw acoustic bootleg, Brian sings the
space twins theme song at the intro of "undone"
180 degrees - was supposed to come out as another 7" but never did. Contained a line that
directly insulted Susan, "why don't you grow up? / You know you make me want to throw up"
a mean little tease
Don't wake me up - written by Susan
Waste another minute - written by Susan
In detail - not sure if this was really the name or if it was ever really finished.
Contains the line "most men drink vanilla, not I". The song is about how Brian wants to
know if it is a crime to be different than others.

Osaka aqua bus 7" (1998):
Osaka aqua bus (re-recorded version)
Goddess of love
The Osaka aqua bus 7" features a re-recorded version of the song that was on the '97
"label search" demos. It had a relatively small print run on duck butter music, and came
in clear bluish vinyl. The song stems from Brian's trip to Osaka, Japan via the =w= tour.
As of 8/99 this record has gone out of print.
TV, music, and candy 7" (1998):
TV, music, and candy (re-recorded version)
Headache

Goddess of Love" / "Osaka Aqua bus" single review:
Brian Bell formed the Space Twins before he was with Weezer. And if
"Goddess of Love" / "Osaka Aqua bus" (Duck Butter Records) is any indication,
Space Twins are better. "Goddess of Love" is a moody, melodic song with a bit
more experimentation than you'd find on a Weezer album, like that accordion,
for instance. But it works! There's emotion oozing from this song that both
the pop lover & the indie rocker can revel in. On the other hand, "Osaka Aqua
bus" is an upbeat, listener friendly song that screams mass appeal. With a
singsong melody, easy to define lyric, and non-offensive instrumentation,
it's all good in an MTV type of way - as well it should be. Space Twins is
no slacking-off side project; this is obviously what Brian Bell does best.

Live Review
I was told that the next band, Space Twins, was some sort of Weezer offshoot.
True to their name, they played a very spacey form of hard rock, which was
still rooted in a twisted sort of American pop. Their lyrics featured plenty
of celestial images, such as "Rings of Saturn", and the music was filled with
spacey effects. Most of the songs featured nice guitar solos, even the vocals
were often drenched in atmospherics. I really enjoyed them, and the steadily
growing crowd seemed to like them, too.

Brian & Tim M. also play with Mephisto. Here's a Review from the LA Weekly
Well, the ball is officially bouncing for the hodgepodge underground's Mephisto...
at least for one more show. Dustin O'Halloran (Devics) started his "Dark Cabaret"
outfit after writing a handful of songs more befitting a silent-movie theatre than
a rock club, combining early-30's Berlin nostalgia with hints of Tom Waits & Nick
Cave. That set up a loyal conscription of longtime friends to unfold the entire
vision, most notably with Aaron Embry (genius) on piano, accordion and trumpet,
and Space Twins' Brian Bell and Timothy Maloof on Banjo and Violin, respectively.
Judging haphazard arrangement of fire-dancers, Magicians and rococo burlesque,
O'Halloran is evidently after something more than the standard night of live
music - he seeks a sensory overload. There is no focal figure, just a collage
of LA talent on equal ground. Joining the circus will be the frozen-in-time echoes
of Sara Lov (also of Devics) and Scott McPherson from the Ethers.

June 25, 1998 Los Angeles, California.
Space twins were the last band at the show, and I could tell people had stuck around to
see them. Personally I had a really good view of the band ... oddly sitting on the floor
right near Brian bell's microphone. I noticed that Brian gets a little crazy-like when
he's performing. He bounced around a lot, and makes these faces as if he was enjoying
himself to the full extent. The rest of the doods were rawking out with Brian, but not
in quite more subtle ways. Some of the songs I can remember space twins playing were
Osaka Aquabus, Rust Colored Sun, in love with love, goddess of love, dreaming of your
love, final voyage, and I think a few others. All the songs were extremely grand.
During Osaka aquabus, Brian was on keyboard instead of his guitar, and he still couldn't
keep still. Final voyage, which was the last song, was obviously a song brian wanted to
get into because he was doing all these motions that went with the song, such as making
a little laser gun with his hands and shooting it off, putting his fingers behind his
head as Martian antenna, and so on. i really liked the song goddess of love, cause i
thought it was really purdy- like. During "dreaming of your love", whenever Brian sang
"I'm dreaming of your love," he would look at a random girl for the whole sentence, and
usually the girls would be all happy about it. I know, cause I was one of the random
girls. =o) After they played, my friend told me that she thought Brian Bell was sort
of like a deranged Mr. Rogers when he was playing ... which is actually pretty true.
Both of them have a happy energy that people really enjoy, you know. Hehe. Space twins
kick arse. Yay. Thanks to miss Ashley for this review.

"Raised in Tennessee, little Brian knew he wanted to be a rock star at an early age.
Lucky enough to catch an Elvis (Presley, that is) concert at the age of four, he wanted
nothing else but to be a hound dog. Studying "geetar" pickin' on TV from such fine
eastern Tennessee programs as "the barneyloo and buster show" and, of course, "hee haw,"
little Brian learned how to pick 'n' grin on a ukulele his grandma won at a bingo game.
Brian's dad, a wacky absent-minded professor and ex-college DJ, turned him onto cool
music he had from the 50's and 60's. So, armed with his first turntable, a fisher price
lo-fi stereo system, little Brian managed to scratch and destroy most of dad's valuable
45's. As Brian grew older, he began to feel isolated and out-of-place with the other
reindeer. While the "normal" Tennessee boys were out hunting possum, chewing tobacco
and making up fish stories, he preferred to stay home and watch Billy Mumy movies.
Ah, movies, music and show biz. Why was it all based in one glorious place -- Los
Angeles? So, just like the Clampetts, Brian packed up my bags and moved to yucca St.,
Hollywood (cause everyone he met at first was on crystal meth.) 'Not at all like the
movies.'"
