HK G36
Back to Assault Rifles Page
The Heckler und Koch G-36 assault rifle has been born as Hk-50 project in the early 1990s. It was adopted in 1999 by the Bundeweswehr (German Army) as it standard service rifle, also in 1999 it was adopted by Spanish Forces. The G36 is also used by the British police, and imported by US Police as well.

The G36 is a departure from all previous assault rifles designed by HK. While all early HK rifles had a delayed blowback design, the G36 gas operated weapon, with a rotating bolt locking into the barrel extension. The receiver is made from plastic with steel reinforcements, the trigger unit is contained inside the plastic pistol grip with triggergaurd, and is available in different versions, with or without 3-round burts. The Polymer handguard, trigger unit, and magazine port are all connected to the receiver by pushpins, so the rifle is easily field-stripped without any tools other than a single pin-punch. The action somewhat resembles that of an Armalite AR-18 or Enfield L85 rifles, being gas operated, short piston stroke, and locking rotating bolt. The Charging Handle is attached to the top surface of the bolt carrier and can be hinged to the left or right, to charge the rifle from either side. The bolt carrier rides on a single guide rod with a recoil spring around it.

The G36 is fed from STANAG-compatible 30 round polymer box magazines, only these ones are translucent. The standard G36 magazines have built-in clips to connect magazines to one another for faster reloading.

The plastic skeleton buttstock is side-folding. On the top of the receiver is a large carrying handle with  built-in sights: the standard G36 has a dual sight system - 3.5X compact scope is coupled to a 1X "red-dot" sight for faster target aquisition at closer distances. The export version of the G36, called the G36E, and carbine version G36K, has only one sight, a 1.5X scope. The G36 has a NATO-standard diameter muzzle break for launching rifle grenades, and can be equipped with a bayonet, or 40mm grenade launcher, also made by HK. The "submachinegun" sized G36 "commando" version is also available.
