rescuers shine in Leyte
Iligan City gained international exposure as members of the Iligan City Disaster Coordinating Council (ICDCC) Rescue Team helped save a cameraman of CNN from a near mishap while taking an actual footage of the rescue operations in Leyte. Southern Leyte Governor Rosette Lerias expressed gratitude to Mayor Lawrence Lluch Cruz for the timely response to the latest tragedy that hit the province by sending the ICDCC Rescue Team. Thirteen ICDCC rescuers were assisted by five representatives from Holcim in the rescue operations for landslide victims in Barangay Ginsaugon, St. Bernard, Southern Leyte. Holcim doled out PhP70T-worth of relief goods consisting of diapers, undergarments and cookware for victims in evacuation centers. The company also shouldered the Php20T transportation expenses of the Iligan rescuers as part of its humanitarian endeavors after local shipping companies refused free transport of the rescue team with their equipment for the operation.
Going to America? Beware of pirated stuffs!
Bringing in Louis Vuitton bags or DVDs to the U.S.A.? They had better be the genuine articles. Entering the US carrying pirated items -- from fake CDs, signature fashion products, cosmetics and even books -- could land you in jail, the Philippine Embassy in Washington, D.C. warned recently. Citing a travel advisory from the US Commercial Service, the embassy said anyone caught with even a single pirated item faces "automatic deportation in violation of intellectual property rights, or arrest and criminal prosecution, in addition to civil fines and penalties." The embassy reported that US Customs officials "are also looking into fake designer bags like Louis Vuitton, Coach, Gucci, Prada, etc."
In Manila, the US Embassy said pirated items would
be confiscated at US ports of entry and violators of the US government's
Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) or anti-piracy law would be penalized.
Non-US citizens caught violating the ban will have their visas cancelled
and face immediate deportation while American nationals will be arrested
and prosecuted.
