Tips for saving old letters, documents, and photos...
One important component of your family tree file is old letters. Letters written by family members can be invaluable in bringing the life and times of ancestors to life. They also may be important for the information they contain (i.e. other family names, dates, places) that could help find that long, lost relative. Many years ago ancestors often wrote letters giving impressions of a new area of the country they might have settled in, perhaps life in the military (Civil War, World War I, etc.).
Here are some ways that are easy and with very little cost to preserve those old letters for future generations to enjoy.
1.Unfold letter so it lays flat.
2.Use an acid-free sheet protector keeping your letter and do keep the original envelope. It should be placed into a separate acid-free protector. Both should be stored in a manila envelope. Letters should NOT be laminated. Remember that acid in the paper could destroy it.
3.Storing the letter or hanging a framed letter in a dark spot away from the direct sunlight is
recommended. Also, avoid bright indirect light.
4.If you wish to copy a letter, remember to make one copy of letter, then make further copies from that copy. The flashes of the copy machine can cause the original letter to fade if done over and over again.
5.Letters are better stored in a place with stable temperatures and humidity levels. If you need to
do any labeling on letters, envelopes or old photos, keep in mind that ink is acidic and also fades over time. Pencil is recommended.
