Darla. Dear One. In the 1600's "Darla" was a prostitute, even though she was middle class.  In 1607 she was dying of syphillis, a priest came to see her.
"Someone close the shutters, it seems wrong that I  should die while the sun is still so bright."
"You will not see it again. Before it sets you will have left this life."
"I didn't ask for a priest. Who invited you?"
It wasn't a priest, it was The Master. He had come to turn Darla into a vampire.
In 1753 Darla found a drunk young man called Liam and turned him into a vampire. She named him Angelus. They were in love.
In 1760 Darla introduced Angelus to the Order of Aurelius,  and to The Master. Angelus did not like the way they live underground and the lifestyle they led.
"We stalk the surface to feed and grow our ranks.  We do *not* live amongst the human pestilence."(The Master)
"I'll be honest.  You really couldn't with that face, now could you."(Angelus)
Angelus offered Darla something better. The Master didn't think she would leave him.
"You belong by my side, out in the world feeding as we like, taking what we need. I'll give you that view you crave, Darla. I'll give you everything. (Laughing) Tell the truth! Whose face do you want to look at for eternity, his or mine?" (Angelus)
"Idiot, I made her!....(to Darla) You're leaving with the stallion, aren't you."(The Master)
So they leave together. In 1860 Darla offers Drusilla as a present to Angelus. He then makes her into a vampire, and she joins them. 20 years later, bored and feeling alone, Drusilla makes Spike.
In 1898 Darla brings Angelus another girl present, this time a gypsy girl. At the discovery of her death, the gypsies curse Angelus with a soul. Darla is disgusted by his humanity and leaves him.
In 1996 we find Darla in Sunnydale and back with The Master. She is given the job of removing Angel to weaken the Slayer. However Angel kills her, his sire.
Afew years later Darla is resurrected by the law firm Wolfram & Hart, to get to Angel and turn him back into Angelus. However they brought her back human. Darla could not cope with the pressures of a human soul, she asked Angel to turn her back.
"Make me what I was again."
"Darla..."
"You said you'd help me."
"I will. I want to, but not like this."
"Turn me back. God, I can't stand this pounding in my chest for another second!"
He refuses to turn her, Darla's body is taking up where it left off before she died; she is dying of syphillis again and it's irreversible. So Wolfram & Hart brought in Drusilla, and she turned her own "grandmother" back into a vampire. The girls then go on a killing spree including 20 or so lawyers from Wolfram & Hart. Angel is determined to stop them. When Darla and Dru go recruiting for "muscle slaves" Angel is there. Later on he shows up and he sets them on fire. Darla is shocked.
"That wasn't Angel..It wasn't Angelus either..Who was that?"
Darla goes to South America seeking help with a little problem she has, Darla is very pregnant with Angel's child. Horrified at the fact that she can't rid herself of this child she returns to LA and to daddy.
There she finds her child is a boy and human. This attracts the attention of many enemies: old and new, who would claim the child as their own. Angel protects Darla and the baby. But she realises her vampire body cannot support a human child, her baby is dying. Darla does the only thing a mother can do for her child; she takes her own life, leaving Angel with a son.
"This child, Angel - it's the one good thing we ever did together. The only good thing. You make sure and tell him that."
