Utena and Anthy's dorm room, he introduces himself, citing that Utena is quite famous among the council members. Apprehensive, Utena asks him if he is also pursuing the Rose Bride. Relieved by his admittance that he is not , Utena tells him how much trouble the council has caused them and how much the duels have affected
their grades, along with how stupid she believes the duels are since they deny Anthy her personal freedoms. Miki then offers to tutor them both as a gesture of good will as well as a reason to be able to see Anthy more often. When Nanami tags along to one of
the study sessions, she endlessly tries to turn Utena and Miki against Anthy. When her plans fail, she asks why everybody likes her
so much. Discovering that Anthy has disappeared, they go downstairs to hear the strains of Miki's famous song being played by Anthy on the piano. "I've found it!" he declares. "I've finally found my shining thing!" For the next few weeks, he and Anthy meet frequently, both to study and play piano. Utena encourages the match, thinkig that she finally has a friend.
At the next Student Council meeting, Miki suggests disbanding the council as Utena's endless arguments against the practice of dueling for a bride have made sense as are Anthy's comments about having to ask her engaged for permission to do everything. The thing that steels him most is Anthy saying to him is that if her engaged asked her to stop playing the piano, she would have to.
The coincil, however sees things differently. When Miki catches his sister exiting the music room from a quick romantic interlude with Touga, Touga gently pushing Miki to fight for the hand of the Rose Bride on the dueling grounds, saying "If you don't fight for the things you desire, someone will take them away from you, Miki." His statement is just enough to convince him to challenge Utena.
Utena is shocked when Miki presents her with a rose and the cryptic message "I'll be waiting for you" Feeling betrayed, she asks him if this is the way to get the music he wants, telling him she thinks he is better suited for the piano. But he refuses to back down and the duel begins.
Seeming evenly matched, the two exchange blows. Miki learns quickly how it was that she defeated
Saionji in the first two duels. However, when Miki seeems to be gaining the upper hand, fueled by his thougts of protecting Anthy's music, she cheers Utena on with
a cry of "Get him, Miss Utena!" His concentration lost, he stumbles and Utena is upon him, fueled by the power of Dios. His rose is lost, and as he falls, he asks "Will no one be my shining thing?"
Juri, who watches from the platform above is not terribly surprised by the outcome of the duel. As he stands, Anthy thanks him and asks him if he would be willing to tutor her again.
