Not much is known about Yami at the beginning. His spirit lives within the millennium puzzle that is worn by Yugi. Whenever Yugi is dueling or his friends are in great danger, Yami will appear and aid them. He has two special abilities: Mind Crush and Mind Shuffle.
Mind Crush: To send evil in one's mind to the Shadow Realm.
Mind Shuffle: To stop one's ability from reading Yami/Yugi's mind.

Later, it is known that Yami is a 5000 years old pharaoh who stopped the evil that almost destroyed the world. Back in Egypt, Shadow Games were played to determine one's fate. Eventually, it got out of hand and the monsters walked the earth and threatened to destory the world. To save the world, he scraficed his life, along with six priests, and the power was locked in seven millennium items. Yami was trapped inside the millennium puzzle until Yugi re-built it, freeing him, but by then he had lost all memories of his past.
