Final
In Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, it mainly conveys a social and sincere friendship message to the audience. The author attempts to let the readers understanding different class and different kind of man, such as characters in the novel George, Lennie, and Curley. Which can bring us to their feeling world and make connection and more understandable to the characters to enjoy the novel more. Steinbeck wrote this novel to all of the people in the society for common social problems.
Lennie and George are different from other people. No one cares about them, but themselves. Ironically, Lennie and George are two totally different people. George is a small man who has a quick and smart mind. He always thinks a thing through before acting. Instead, Lennie is a big man who has a mind of child. He always forgets things, which other people say except George. They are different, but their friendship is valuable. The are unique, isolated and hard to accept by society, especially Lennie. Nevertheless, they still create and strive for their dream, which are they wanted to own a piece of land by themselves. However, it is hard to achieve that because they are in low class society. In that time, the society was separated into high, middle, and low class. No matter what, they still pursue their dreams. George always takes care of Lennie, even though he makes a lot of troubles and Lennie only remembers what George says. Therefore, their friendship is valuable. Another example, which forced by the society, is the Old Candy. He is forced to kill his dog by his boss'son Curley.
The author was successful in getting the message across. At the end of the story, George is forced to kill Lennie because he doesn't want Lennie to die confused and terrified. Lennie's tragedy causes George's life to become lonely and frustrated. Candy's only friend dog was killed; that's also caused him to become lonely. Over here, the message of loneliness and unfair society has been conveyed.
I think this is very nice book for students to read. It uses a lot of literary elements in the book. It is good for students who are just learning literature. In the novel, I like the setting most. It begins the story in a sandy bank of the Salinas River and George and Lennie has dreams over there then, they go to the interior of a bunkhouse to get the job. In Act II, it also begins in Salinas River, and turns to the stable room. In Act III, it is located in a great barn and then go back to the setting of the beginning. The story and George and Lennie's dream begin around the river. The story and Lennie's life end also around the river. So the novel opens and closes in the scene of river. The central parts of the setting are surrounding the farm. Steinbeck also uses poetic techniques such as irony. It is so ironic that the small man has to take care of the big man.
Steinbeck had written a lot of books, Of Mice and Men is one of his best works. In 1940, The Grapes of Wrath won the Pulitzer Prize for the best novel of the year. I probably will read more novels by Steinbeck. His novels mostly focus on social problems and life of the working man. And social causes are usually affected by the setting. So in his novel, setting plays important role in the work. After read this novel, I think I get a lot of help, especially, the reading skill, it helps me learn a lot of new vocabulary. Also, it let me know a lot of human nature. Different characters represent different nature and personality. In addition, it also helps me to know a lot of examples for using literary elements.
