Comments:
Returning to supply officer under
standing watch by my Exec, LT Warren, 4 Mark 14 torpedo’s for inspection. There
were 20 torpedoes fired, of those 16 had excellent repeatable solutions,
resulting in no hits. There is obviously a problem with the torpedo’s, aside
from the now frequent premature detonations; torpedoes screws were heard 20+
seconds past the calculated detonation time.
4 March 1942 08:00 Departed Pearl Harbor for patrol area Caroline
Islands, Sector Purple.
13 March 1942 22:10 6d-55’N, 144d-54E. Arrived on station. 75470 Gallons
of fuel left, proceeded at 2/3’s to patrol BOX of shipping lanes South of
Islands.
15 March 1942 07:38 Visual Sighting 2 BB’s at 15,000, unable to intercept
zigzag. Radioed contact report at 22:00.
16 March 1942 07:46 06d-22N,
151d-14E Visual Sighting of small convoy. 1 Troop Transport SHIP 3, one
Standard Merchant SHIP 4, 2 armed supply IJN auxiliaries, SHIP 5 and SHIP 6.
Escorted by one unidentified DD SHIP 7. Worked into submerged firing position
ahead of convoy. Fired #1 and #2 at SHIP 3 5 seconds apart at 1800 yards with a
depth setting of 24’. 1 premature detonation about 100 yards from vessel, 1
miss. Fired # 3 and #4 at SHIP 4 at 1600 yards, 1 premature detonation, and 1
miss. Fired #5 at SHIP 3, at 1200 yards resulting in a premature detonation
about 100 yards in front of target. DD now starting counter measures. Fired #6
at SHIP 3 at 1300 yards, resulting in premature detonation. Dived to 300 feet
to evade ASW, no depth charges heard. Had torpedo rooms check all torpedo
settings.
17 March 1942 08:44 Sonar contact. 08:57 Visual Sighting of small convoy.
1 Armed Merchant Cruiser SHIP 8, one Large Freighter SHIP 9, 1 armed supply IJN
auxiliaries SHIP 10 and one Small Freighter SHIP 11. Convoy is not escorted.
Worked into submerged firing position a beam of convoy. Fired #1 and #7 at SHIP
8 5 seconds apart at 1730 yards with a depth setting of 30’. 2 miss. Fired # 7
and #8 at SHIP 8 at 1450 yards, 2 miss. Fired #9 at SHIP 8, at 1200 yards
resulting in a miss. Fired #10 and #2 at 1300 yards, both detonated
prematurely. Convoy scattering, fired #5 and #6 at Small Freighter, 2 misses.
09:28 Made contact with SHIP 8 circling around to join the rest of the convoy.
Closed to within 1000 yards, fired# 1 and #2, 2 misses. Fired #7 and #8, 2
