Commander’s Comments:
March 12
we spotted three Sampans, cruised past at about 2,000 yards distance. Two hours
later we had an air radar contact and had to dive to avoid the aircraft.
March 13
we spotted three Sampans again and believe them to be the same as the day
before. We think the crews are collaborators so we sunk all three with the deck
gun. Resuming patrol.
March 14
spotted a large convoy and targeted three oil tankers. Fired and sunk all three.
Went deep to avoid the escorts. Heavy depth charging but no damage. Finally
lost contact and resumed patrol.
March 15
foggy day, we spotted a medium convoy and targeted two oil tankers, sunk both
and dove to avoid the escorts. Depth charged with no damage. Lost contact
resumed patrol.
March 16
spotted a medium convoy of five ships with no escorts. Fired sinking one oil
tanker and damaging an oil tanker, standard merchantman, and a troop transport.
Surfaced and sunk all three with the deck gun. Last ship is trying to escape,
we followed and sunk it with the deck gun alone. Resuming patrol.
March 16 spotted a medium convoy with heavy
escort according to the radar. Escorts are far out in front and to the rear.
Fired at the two lead ships, three torpedo’s each causing heavy damage, dark
and foggy out so we surfaced close aboard and sunk both with the deck gun and
than escaped on the surface with the escorts never knowing where we were.
All torpedo’s expended, headed for home.
