Comments: We
arrived on station on June 10 and started to patrol our patrol area of SC-1.
June 20, We have been on patrol for 10 days without
sighting anything bigger than a Sampan, decided to radio ComSubRon for
permission to shift out patrol area further to the east.
June 21, Received reply from ComSubRon 4A with request
for patrol area shift to the east granted, headed for the center of the area
(SC-2) in hopes of better luck.
June 21, 22:15 hours, radar contact astern. Turned to
intercept and spotted a CA group consisting of a CA and two CL’s. Dove to radar
depth and set-up on the CA. Fired and sunk a Mogami Class CA. Dove deep to
avoid the escorts and found a thermal at 350 ft., depth charged without any
damage. Lost contact at about 01:20 hours on the 22. Resuming patrol.
June 22, 05:00 hours, radar contact astern again. Turned to
intercept. We could not catch the contact and never sighted what it was,
resuming patrol.
June 22, 19:23 hours, radar contact ahead. 19:50 hours we
spotted a CV Group consisting of two CV’s and a CA. Set-up on the two CV’s as
we headed between them. Fired both forward and stern tubes sinking a Unryu
class CV and a Ryujo Class CVL. Dove deep to avoid the escorts and got below a
thermal. Depth charged with any damage. Lost contact at about 22:30 hours,
resuming patrol.
June 23, 03:37 hours, radar contact, turned to intercept.
04:20 hours spotted a small convoy consisting of two merchants and very heavily
escorted by seven Patrol Crafts and a Escort Destroyer. Maneuvered between the
escorts screen and fired at the Oil Tanker sinking it. Dove deep to avoid the
escorts and received a heavy depth charging with out any damage received. Lost
contact at about 06:30 hours, resuming patrol.
June 23, 19:49 hours, radar contact, turned to intercept. 21:30 hours, spotted a Large convoy
consisting of eleven ships with eight escorts, six PC’s and two DE’s. Maneuvered
into the front of the convoy and submerged to await it’s approach. Headed
between the two columns and fired sinking a Troop Transport, two AMC’s and a
Standard Merchantman. Dove to avoid the escorts and got under a thermal and
moved off. Lost contact and went to radar depth for a look around. 01:10 hours
radar contact, most of the remaining convoy seems to be astern of us with two
contacts ahead off to the left. Closest contact 11,000 yards. Surfaced and
decided to see what the two single contacts ahead were. First was 16,000 yards
away and second was about 19,000 yards ahead. 01:54 hours we spotted a
Converted Factory Ship. We headed in and with all torpedoes expended we opened
up with the deckgun at 2,200 yards sinking the target without it ever firing a
shot in return. Headed for the second contact now off to the right. 05:02 hours
we spotted a Oil Tanker and moved in. At a range of 2,500 yards we opened up
and sunk the target without ever receiving a shot in return. 33 deckgun rounds
left and no torpedoes so we headed home.
