16 June 1942 11:51 36-07’N, 143-40’E Entered Patrol Zone NJ5. Calm seas and clear. Plan to patrol the North South shipping lanes West of Hachinohe and Ominato. This is the shipping lane most probable used to transport supplies that are headed south from the Tsugaru Strait. Patrolling submerged at 1/3 propulsion during daylight hours.

17 June 1942 00:00 38-32’N, 143-45’E. Atmospheric conditions: Calm seas and clear. 4 Knots. No target contacts during previous day. 17June 1942 20:32 SD RADAR inoperable. Humid conditions may be causing a short on the power supply that may be blowing the vacuum tubes. Looking for short, however only one Emitter Tube is left due to the others being blown while troubleshooting the problem.

18 June 1942 00:00 40-35’N, 142-24’E. Atmospheric conditions: Calm seas and clear. 4 Knots. No target contacts during previous day. SD still inoperable 18 June 1942 07:05 40-10’N, 142-00’E. At periscope depth, worked into firing position 2200 yards ahead and starboard of SHIP 1. Fired #1 forward torpedo set at 10’ (Draft 15) offset 0, range 2200 at 07:28. Torpedo #1 missed, however solution continued to check during torpedo run. Positively identified AK as the small supply ship Hitatki Maru. Adjusted depth setting accordingly. Fired #2 forward torpedo set at 7’ (Draft 13) offset 0, range 1800 at 07:31 Miss. Fired #3 forward torpedo set at 7’ (Draft 13) offset 0, range 1200 at 07:32. Miss. AK attempting to Ram. Fired #4 forward torpedo down the throat set at 7’ (Draft 13) offset 0, range 700 at 07:33. Miss. Dived and maneuvered for a Stern attack. After monitoring sonar, went back to periscope depth. 20 June 1942 00:00 41-30’N, 142-59’E. Atmospheric conditions: Calm seas and mostly cloudy. SD radar permanently disabled, last emitter tube blown while troubleshooting set. I plan to patrol on the surface during daylight hours due to the large distance from any known enemy airfields.

20 June 1942 06:59 42-09’N, 143-05’E Visual sighting of one fishing motor sampan via high scope SHIP 5. Further investigation yielded the possibility of a whip antenna.
