Commander’s Comments:
RMKS/ 1.
We have a full load of the new MK XVIII torpedoes onboard and we plan on
putting them through a through test.
RMKS/ 2.
October 14, 23:02 hours, spotted a medium convoy and manoeuvred into a firing
position in front of the convoy. We fired at a range of 800 to 1,100 yards and
sunk an Oil Tanker and two Troop Transports. We went deep to avoid the ASW
attack and found a thermal layer at 250 feet and were able to evade without
them ever picking us up. Lost contact at 00:41 hours, resuming patrol.
RMKS/ 3.
October 15, 02:38 hours, radar contact. 02:49 hours spotted a medium convoy and
manoeuvred into a firing position. Fired and sunk three Troop Transports. We
dove deep to avoid the ASW and got under a thermal at 250 feet. Lost contact at 05:41 hours and resumed
patrol.
RMKS/ 4.
October 15, 08:13 hours, spotted a large convoy and completed an end-around to
get into a firing position. At 1.300 yards we fired sinking two Oil Tankers.
Dove to avoid the ASW and got under a thermal. We went to radar depth and picked
up the DD’s at about 14,500 and 18,100 yards astern. Waited until they cleared
the area and than surfaced and resumed patrol.
RMKS/ 5. October 16, 01:52 hours, radar contact. At 01:58 hours we spotted a medium convoy and set-up on the lead ship a large tanker, sinking the same. Dove to avoid the ASW and lost contact at 04:22 hours. Resuming patrol.
RMKS/ 7.
October 16, 15:05 hours, spotted a small convoy of two Oil Tankers and a CFS.
And single DD for escort. Fired and sunk the two tankers and dove deep to avoid
the escort. Lost contact at 17:35 hours. Surfaced and picked up a single
contact, headed for it’s position. Spotted a CFS, most likely the one that
scattered when we sunk the two oil tankers. No escort in site so we decided to
attack it with out deck gun. Sunk target and resumed our patrol.
RMKS/ 8.
October 18, 00:38 hours, spotted a medium convoy and sunk an Oil Tanker. Dove
to avoid the ASW and lost contact at 03:34 hours. Resuming patrol.
RMKS/ 9.
October 19 06:10 hours, spotted a medium convoy, fired and sunk an Oil Tanker
with out last two torpedoes. Went deep to avoid the ASW and lost contact at
10:07 hours, heading home.
RMKS/ 10.
These MK XVIII torpedoes seem to be more reliable then the MK XIV but not as
powerful. On several occasions we had to use two torpedoes to sink a target
that a MK XIV would sink with one. We also used the deck gun on several
occasions to finish of a target when the destroyers were not close.
