10-10’N, 134-20’E Entered Patrol Zone Palau Islands Sector 1. Calm seas and mostly cloudy. Plan to patrol the shipping lanes between
Japan and the Port of Koror. Then work
our way patrolling West of Palau to intercept any AMC that have been reported
to be running between Palau and Truk.
Patrolling on the surface with dual high lookouts on the periscope
shears.

20 November 1943 21:46 Visual contact with trailing ship, SHIP
1 (1 AP) Troopship. Radar confirms two escorts patrolling ahead of convoy. Maneuvering in for shot.
20 November 1943 22:20 Visual contact with two additional
ships, SHIP 2 (1 AK) Armed Merchant Cruiser and SHIP 3 (1 AP) Troopship. Convoy in line-ahead formation. Changed
approach for surface shot on SHIP 2.

ships, SHIP 4 (1 AK Standard Merchant and SHIP 5 (1 AK) Supply ship. Fired tubes 1 –3 at 2200 yards at adjusted
keel depth with offsets of 0,0,1 at SHIP 2.
Fired Tubes 4, 5 and 6 at 1800 yards at adjusted keel depth with offsets
of 0,0,1 at SHIP 1.
20 November 1943 22:53 SHIP 1 - 3 hits target destroyed. SHIP
2 – 2 hits, 1 probable, target destroyed. Convoy scattered. Changed course to 137 at Flank speed to
clear the area.
20 November 1943 22:57 Renewed visual contact with SHIP 4 circling
to form up the convoy again. Circled
around to work into a Stern shot.
Visual contact SHIP 6 (1) DD Escort at 19 knots and zero AOB, 4400
Yards. Considered breaking off the attack until SHIP 3 appeared as an over
lapping target behind SHIP 4. Sent
lookouts below and turned to bring stern tubes to bear.
20 November 1943 22:59 Fired tubes 7 –10 at 1800 yards at
adjusted keel depth with offsets of 0,0,1, -1 at SHIP 4 SHIP 4 started to
tighten it turning radius, exposing SHIP 3.
20 November 1943 23:01 SHIP 3 - 3 hits target destroyed. Changed course to track convoy, now heading
000 at 14.5 knots.
21 November 1943 00:00 Seas getting stirred up, can only
just keep up with convoy. Moderate
seas, partly cloudy.
21 November 1943 03:00 Gave up pursuit, convoy slowly
gaining distance. Radioed contact
report.
21 November 1943 05:30 Patrolled submerged due to high
probability of aircraft being called to the area to look for Greenling.

yards at adjusted keel depth with offsets of -1, -1 at SHIP 10. Both misses as the offsets were errantly
left at –1 and due to the target circled away tightly.
23 November 1943 01:41 SHIP 10 again circling in our
direction. Fired tube 1 at 2500 yards
at adjusted keel depth with offset of 0 at SHIP 10. Miss as the target once
again circled away tightly about 2/3 way through the torpedo run time. Clear the area to reload and to lose a
trailing escort.

firing position between escort screen and convoy of 2 ships as identified by
sonar.
