Comments:
RMKS/ 1. 02 June 1943 08:30 Departed Fremantle. Along with
USS JACK, escorted through the safe zone by the DD HMS DEVON. Fire Control
Party worked continuous firing solutions on the JACK and visa versa until
entrance into Exmouth Gulf.
RMKS/ 2. 05 June 1943 11:51 Entered Exmouth Gulf and topped
fuel tanks. Departed at 16:37.
RMKS/ 3. 06 June 1943 04-58’N, 121-55’E Entered Patrol Zone
Sulu Sea Sector 3 and Sector 4. Moderate seas and partly cloudy. Plan to patrol
the roughly North-South shipping lanes between the Strait of Mindanao/Jolo
Island and the port of Iloilo, Panay. This is the shipping lane most probable
used to transport supplies that are headed south from the South China Sea.
Patrolling on the surface with dual high lookouts on the periscope shears.
RMKS/ 4. 11 June 1943 00:00 04-58’N, 121-55’E. Atmospheric
conditions: Moderate seas and partly cloudy. No target contacts during previous
day.
11June 1943 18:12 SD RADAR contact 4 – 6
ships in a convoy, pursuing contact on radar bearing.
11June 1943 18:26 Visual contact 6 Maru
and one escort in a convoy, working into surface torpedo attack under near
ideal conditions.
11June 1943 18:40 Convoy identified as
SHIP 1 (1) Large Freighter, SHIP 2 (1) Armed Merchant Cruiser, SHIP 3 (1)
Converted Factory Ship, SHIP 4 (1) Small Passenger Liner, SHIP 5 (1) Small
Freighter, SHIP 6 (1) Unidentified, and escorted by SHIP 7 one Mutsuki Class
Destroyer.
11June 1943 19:21 Fired tubes 1 –4 at
2100 yards at keel depth with offsets of 0,0,1,-1 at SHIP 1. Fired Tubes 5 and
6 at 2300 yards at keel depth with offsets of 0,0 at SHIP 3.
11June 1943 19:22 Convoy Zigged
unexpectantly.
11June 1943 19:23 SHIP 1- 1 miss, 1 dud,
2 hits SHIP 1 SUNK. SHIP 3 – 2 misses do to zig. Convoy scattered.
11June 1943 19:33 Worked on a stray using
SD Radar. Visual sighting of SHIP 6, now identified as a Standard Merchant.
11June 1943 19:42 Fired tubes 7,8,9 at
1400 yards at keel depth with offsets of 0,0,-1 at SHIP 6 1 dud, 2 hits. Fired
tube 10 at 1300 yards, Premature detonation. Turned, fired tubes 1 and 2, 1
dud, 1 hit, SHIP 6 SUNK
11June 1943 19:58 Worked on a new stray
using SD Radar. Visual sighting of SHIP 3. Visual Sighting of SHIP 7 (Escort),
attempted to clear the area at 15 knots, SHIP 7 gaining, crash-dived. ASW
consisted on one depth charge fairly close, and then target was easily avoided.
DD kept us down until 20:51.
11June 1943 20:53 Surfaced and obtained a
SD contact at 10,200 yards. Followed at flank speed, but slowly the target
gained separation. I assume the target was the Escort that put us down, and it
was heading to either Jolo Island or the port of Zamboanga to regroup with its
convoy that scattered. USS Greenling will patrol in a North-South line to catch
them when they come back out.
RMKS/ 5. 12 June 1943 00:00 07-30’N, 121-32’E. Atmospheric
conditions: Moderate seas and partly cloudy.
12 June 1943 00:27:27 SD RADAR contact 4
– 6 ships in a convoy, pursuing contact on radar bearing.
12 June 1943 00:37:13 Visual contact SHIP
8 (1) Yamato Class Battleship with SHIP 9 – 13 (5) unidentified escorts in a
convoy, speed 20 Knots, Heading 340. Worked into a submerged torpedo attack
between the escorts.
12 June 1943 00:43 Fired tubes 1 –6 at
2050 yards at keel depth with offsets of 0,0,0,1,-1,0 at SHIP 8: 3 Duds, 3
Hits. Swung around full rudder and fired tubes 7 – 10 at 2300 yards at keel
depth with offsets of 0,0,0, -1 at SHIP 8: 2 duds, 1 Hit. Crash-dived to avoid
ASW. Worked to a depth of 275, under a very distinct thermal layer and escaped
the escorts. 1 depth charge was heard in the far distance.
12June 1943 03:28 SD RADAR contact 4 – 6
ships in a convoy, pursuing contact on radar bearing.
12June 1943 03:38 Visual contact 8 Maru
and one escort in a convoy, working into surface torpedo attack under near
ideal conditions. Possibly the same convoy that scattered earlier in the night
with a few new ships
12June 1943 03:42 Convoy identified as
SHIP 9 (1) Supply Ship, SHIP 2 (1) Armed Merchant Cruiser, SHIP 3 (1) Converted
Factory Ship, SHIP 4 (1) Small Passenger Liner, SHIP 5 (1) Small Freighter,
SHIP 6-8 (3) Unidentified, and escorted by SHIP 7 one Mutsuki Class Destroyer.
Convoy most definitely is made up from units of our previous contact. Closed on
target on surface.
12 June 1943 03:56 Fired tubes 1 –2 at
1500 yards at keel depth with offsets of 0,0 at SHIP 3: 2 Duds. Evaded ASW
easily with dive to 250’, one Depth Charge logged, not close.
RMKS/ 6. 12 June 1943 05:30 Out of torpedoes, return to
SUB-BASE Fremantle.
RMKS/ 7. 20 June 1943 10:12 Arrived SUB-BASE Fremantle
