As it turns out Steve Bass is no longer the newsletter editor, the job has fallen back on Deann Jahns. It is unknown if the editor job is available, if you're interested contact Deann Jahns. I know she could use a break. [2/23/02] :)

Chat Rooms. Did you know if two or more people who have computers, can connect to each other and have a live "chat" session. It's sort of like a party line with rules. What is required is a computer, a web browser, an online connection (like AOL) and a place to meet called a "chat-room." Chat rooms come in many flavors, my sister and I use a chat room while playing cribbage via Yahoo. Others use private very secure software, requiring a special host computer. Meetings are held when a person types his message and all the others read live what has been typed. Then when this person is finished someone else, that has typed a comment sends their message for all to read. Next time your are online look into chat rooms. But please be careful, many of these places are filled with less than civil language and it is not a place for young people. There are supervised chat rooms as well aimed for the young folks. Take for an example our civic board that may need to discuss a situation that needs immediate attention, rather than each of them calling one another, repeating themselves, or calling for a meeting at one of there homes etc. They each could be at home sitting at their own computer (in pj's) participating as needed. :) |
How to keep the Computer Doctor away. Do backups, run the basic preventative maintenance software on a regular schedule. Keep current , if you upgrade your OS (operating system) check to see if you need to upgrade your applications. Don't mix, production, and mission critical computers with game playing entertainment. If your are an accountant using a computer, with clients data on it, don't let little Susy play pac-man unsupervised. Be armed locate someone you can trust to advise you on what to do if. . . Ask yourself, do you have a trusted mechanic that works on the car when it's not feeling well? Same goes for a computer, before its too late, be prepared. Remove useless programs, think twice before allowing an application to be installed. Thunderstorm coming, unplug it from the wall, don't forget your phones and TVs as well. Power problems, install a UPS (uninterruptable power supply), add up your total amps, mutiply times volts for the watt size to get. An average workstation is around 450W. :) |
