The Longest Kiss: Chapter 5

Gundam Wing doesn't belong to me

At around one am, Hilde awoke on the couch. She suddenly remembered what had happened. She remembered her conversation with Duo and then crying her eyes out on the floor. She didn’t, however, remember laying down on the couch. She also didn’t remember putting a cover on herself.
She looked up and saw Duo fast asleep in a chair close by. Did he carry me to the couch? she thought. She blushed slightly. After all that’s happened, even after finding that dead body in the closet, she loved Duo more than anything on earth. He meant the world to her.
She got up slowly, as not to make noise enough to wake Duo, and tip-toed to her room. She opened her door and crept inside. She sat down on the edge of her bed and thought about what all had happened. Maybe I overreacted. She didn’t want to hurt Duo, more than anything else, she didn’t want that. She laid back and stared at the ceiling, noting every imperfection as her thoughts raced back and forth. In her deep thinking, she fell asleep.
When she awoke for the second time, it was morning and the sent of fried eggs filled the air. She stumbled out of bed and into the kitchen. She spotted Duo, standing over the stove, spatula in hand, wearing an apron. It looked so incredibly cute that she nearly forgot about the dead body in the closet. She giggled in spite of herself.
Duo turned around and smiled. “Oh, I see sleeping beauty is awake. I hope you like your eggs over easy!”
“That’s fine.” Hilde replied, sitting down at the table. She felt a little unconfortable. She hated it when they would be arguing, or discussing something important, and then Duo would just start acting as if nothing at all had happened. Yet she was relieved that he seemed to be feeling a little better. Maybe it’ll all pass over. Just as that thought entered her mind, an image of that poor little girl appeared and Hilde slapped her hand over her eyes and forehead in an attempt to make it disappear. Try as she might, she couldn’t forget the gruesome image of that girl.
What exactly had Duo done to her? She was pracitically naked. Had Duo raped her? No, Duo wasn’t like that, she knew it. He didn’t need to sink to that level. He had girls lined up to sleep with him, not that he took them all up on it. But why were her clothes gone? Why did he even kill her at all? None of it made sense.
“Hilde, your eggs are done.” Duo told her, sitting the plate down in front of her. She looked up at him. He was smiling brightly and his eyes looked so happy and gentle. Could those eyes belong to a killer? But the eyes he wore yesterday right after she got off the phone with Quatre could belong to one. She was so confused. She silently begged Quatre to hurry. She didn’t want to deal with this mess by herself.
They both ate their breakfasts quickly and Duo stood up abrubtly. “I need to go to the store right quick. I need some apple juice.”
“Apple juice?”
“Yeah, you know, ‘An apple a day keeps the doctor away’? I think I’m gettin’ the flu or something. I won’t be long.”
“Oh. Ok. See you later.” Hilde watched him leave and then got up from the table. She looked at her watch. She jumped up and ran toward the bathroom. She had to work today! Passing Duo’s room, she stopped and glanced inside. Again, the bed was neat, untouched.
She looked at the front door, then at her watch again, then decided to have a peak. She walked inside, took a deep breath, and opened the closet door. To her horror, two bodies fell out onto the floor. No, not another one! Please not another one! she kept repeating to herself in her mind.
It was another young girl, who’s physical state was nearly identical to the other. The only difference was that there was another wound on her wrist. It looked as if her hand would have fallen off it the wound would have been another centimeter deeper. Again, no blood was in sight.
Hilde nearly fainted, but not because she was squimish, it was because her sweet, beautiful Duo was seeming further and further away. As if on cue, there was a knock at the door. Why’s he knocking? I didn’t lock the door.
Hilde quickly replaced the bodies and ran into the living room. She opened the door and her eyes widened slightly.
“Hello, Hilde. Where’s Duo?” the innocent-looking blonde asked.
Hilde couldn’t help herself. She hugged Quatre as tightly as she could. “Oh God, Quatre! Duo’s gone crazy! I just know it! He went to the store and I checked his room. There’s another body in there!”
“Shhh... It’s ok. Where are the bodies?”
“In his closet. You don’t want to see them. I don’t even know if I want to know what he’s done to them!”
Quatre just stood there, sinlently holding her. It was a pure friendship hug, but it wouldn’t look that way to anyone else. Especially someone who loved one of the two. It would look like a symbol of everything that could of been, everything they’ve now lost, and everything they would kill to own.
That’s exactly what it looked like to Duo as he stood there at the edge of the cement walkway leading to their house. He dropped his brown sack and didn’t even flench at the sound of it crashing against the ground. His violet eyes were wider than they’d ever been before. Slowly, smolderingly, they changed. A new color was being formed, a reddish, violent, beautiful color filled with dancing rays of anger and sorrow and loss all rolled into one single emotion: jealousy.
