This is a great song. Even though I'm not entirly sure on the lyrics' meanings, it is still a great song. It is great because within 2 meagar verses, and a short, catchy courous, 3 entirely differnt themes present themselves. Let us start by looking at the title. The "Heart-Shaped Box", refers to 3 things, which develope as the three themes of the song. First, it is refering to being trapped inside a relationship, love that is confining. Second, it is a drug reference, one of addiction. Third, the "Heart-Shaped Box" is the one Kurt's "fans" have put him in, makeing him nothing more than a disposable thing, not an intelegent person or an artist. Now, on to the Lyrics! "She eyes me like a pisces when I am week"-Im not sure what pisces has to do with this line, but in case you want to know, its a constilation (probobly something elese here though). I suspect that "she" (drugs, lover, and fans) is looking at Kurt in a hunry type of way, looking to consume him. "I've been locked inside your heart-shaped box for weeks"- I think we covred the meaning of the box earlier. "I was drawn into your magnet tar pit trap". Well, most of us would stay away from a tar pit, but this one's magnetic, which means its not just tempting, but as u get closer, it pulls you in harder. This is refering to the drugs (tar pit is a nick name for heroin I think, something Kurt was taking at the time). It is also refering to the addiction of drugs. Like drugs, love had draged him in and held him. And finally, It looked good, being a rock star, attractive, but it wont let go again. "I wish I could eat your cancer when you turn black"- Um.... Next! (If you have a theory, send me an e-mail at ssn39@yahoo.com). Courus-" Hey, Wait, Iv got a new complaint! Hate, wait, I'v got a new complaint, forever in deut to your priceless advice." The chorus... im not entirly sure, iv heard its about how people thought Kurt was always complaining (and he had all rights too!-ed), and it makes sence if you translate it "Hey, wait, let me out of this box. O sorry, I shouldnt have spoken up, you o fan are SO much better" (notice irony here). This could also fit in the relationship theme, but i dont see a drug connection. |
