The Fool on the Hill
I don't really know much about the history of this song, only that it is by the Fab 4 (The Beatles) and sounds like it is from later in their carrer, but im not sure. All I know is I like it.

Lyrics

Day after day, alone on a hill
The man with the foolish grin is keeping perfectly still
But nobody wants to know him
They can see that hes just a fool
And he never gives an answer
But the fool on the hill
Sees the sun going down
And the eyes in his head
See the world spinning round
Well on his way his head in a cloud
The man of a thousand voices speaking perfectly loud
But nobody ever hears him
Or the sound he appears to make
And he never seems to notice
But the fool on the hill...
Nobody seems to like him
They can tell what he wants to do
And he never shows his feelings
But the fool on the hill

Interpretation

This song is about a man on the fringe of society, a man who is extreamly smart and sees the world in ways no one else does. And because of his behavior, to sit on the hill, people call him a fool. The hill is an important symbol in this song. First, it represents how the man is on a higher level than everyone else. Second, the hill is the first of many references to natural things, like the hill, sun, cloud and world. This helps to show how the fool knows about the big picture, symbolized by him seeing the world "spinning round". In the second stanza, the song becomes much less obvious. Actually, im not entirely sure what its about. If you have any idea, e-mail me at SSn39@yahoo.com.
