Lyrics
Karma police, arrest this man
This is what you get
Karma police, I've given all I can
This is what you get
For a miniute there, I lost myself

Interpretation
I love this song. It is filled with irony, and though short, is complex and says alot. First of all, I will discuss the unconventional mechanics of this song. Throught the song, Thom (singer for radiohead) is singing from the point of view of differnt peole. When he is mainly singing form the point of view of a typical member of society, who claims to accept differances in people, but does not act that way, forceing people around them to conform (I will refer to this person as "the main charector"). He switches to other people though throught the song. In the first verse, the main charector are telling the karma police to arrest a strange man who talks in a way that is not understandable, and a girl with an offensive appearance. By saying the girl is "having a party", she is not unhappy. The "hitler" hairdo just shows how the main charector feels about this girl, that he sees her as a threat, when she is not. The "Karma police", which is the group the main charector tells to arrest these people he doesn't like is an imaginary group. This "group" seems to be the pressure from society to cause everyone to conform and act the same. The karma police are not really an organization or anything, but an understanding. The corus, "This is what your get", is the "karma police" punishing the man who talks in maths and the girl with the hitler hairdo. In the second verse, we see the main charector realizing his wrong doing by working for the karma police, but what seems to be a "friend" is telling him he cant escape. On the first and third lines of the second verse, the main charector is speaking. For the second and fourth lines though however, his "friend" is telling him he cant get out and that he is still on the "pay roll". I think the payroll is a symbol of how the main charector is still benifiting from what the Karma police give him (popularity, the short high you get from making fun of someone, that kind of thing). Finnaly, in the third verse, the main charector realizes he was wrong and agrees with his friend. I think this represents how people tend to give in when it is easier to do so rather than continuing an argument and other things. |
