Lyrics
Truth, covered in security
I've got this friend, you see, who makes me feel
Don't tell me what I wanna hear
I've got this friend, you see, who makes me feel

Interpretation
(NOTE: This interpretation is highly personal) This is one of my all time favorite Nirvana songs (at least right now it is). This song discusses the self-isolation of the singer (assumably Kurt himself), and the way we (or, at least I do) protect ourselves from emotional harm from the ruthless society we live in. The first line is refering to how we tell the truth, yet not the whole truth, protecting those emotions and feelings that others might laugh at, yet they are the feelings (again, I speek from experiance) we all share. The second and third line is a rationalization of why the whole truth must not be revealed. The last 2 lines continue on this theme (though im not sure about why we are trading off and taking turns). The chorous, continues the theme to a certain extent, with the line, "I'll arrest myself and wear a shield", yet i'm not sure how to explain the rest. The second stanza is a parody of some aspects of our culture. "Don't tell me what I wanna hear"? I love this line. This is expressing the singer's dislike of people saying things just to make the other person happy. The second line is making fun of how people are looking for the thrill of being afraid, and yet they are experincing fear while thinking about missing out on fear (lol). The rest of the stanza continues the theme. After repeating the some lines, the song ends in a very interesting manner. Apparently, the sinnger has made a deal with someone, and I dont understand this part of the song, which makes me mad, so if anyone has any ideas on meanings, let me know at, SSn39@yahoo.com |
