Lyrics
Underneath the bridge, the tarp has sprung a leak
And the animals I've trapped have all become my pets
And I'm living off grass, and the drippings from the ceilings
But its ok to eat fish, cause they haven't any feelings
Something in the way |
Interpretation
Four lines sure can sure say alot, especially when writen by Kurt Kobain. This song is one of the most intricate songs I have ever heard. Almost each time I listen to it, a new idea of what the song is trying to express pops into my head. so, lets see what I can do tonight...
This song is interpreted on many differnt levels. The basic, elementry interpretation is that this song is about when Kurt was homeless, living underneath a bridge. The third line expresses how he was just scraping by at that point. If you pry deeper tough, you find the song is about much, much, much more. The image I picture for the first line is a leaking tarp underneath a bridge (obviously), but what is ironic about this statement is that the tarp is leaking, supposably from rain or something. But if a tarp is under a bridge, how would it get wet at leak? I am not entirly sure what Kurt is refering to here, yet I believe it might be refering to some part of society that is about to start a "revolution" (poor word for this situation). In the second line, there are 2 non-basic interpretations (all of which I stole from www.jesus.com, a kick ass web site. On it, is a sermon about Kurt, I recommend you go read it). It is refering to animal rights and the explotation of animals. The 4th line also refers to this. The next level it may be interpreted on is that it is refering to relationships. Also, it is at this purly metephorical level that the song can be interpreted as showing how humans can justify anything. And this, is probobly what the song is about.
