St. Andrews Cross

A Tour of Dunoon, Scotland

This is a view of Dunoon looking from the hill, above the Highland Mary statue, north towards the Loch. In the center of this picture is a blue building which is the "Queen's Hall," the location of the Submarine Birthday Balls. On the next hill over you can make out the "Cowal Golf Course."

"The Navy Exchange"
Navy Exchange
This was our Navy Exchange, the place to be seen after church on Sunday....... okay, so it was the only place open in town after church, what's your point :-)

Update (courtesy of "TLP"):  The Navy Exchange is now a supermarket for the Co-operative Society.

"Baskin Robbins at the Navy Compound"
Baskin Robbins
The Baskin Robbins.........mmmmm. It always had at least 3 of the 31 flavors and the snack bar next door had some great nachos and cheese....right Jim?

Update (courtesy of "TLP"):  Baskin Robbins is now totally demolished and is a car park.

"The Cal-Mac and Western Ferries"
Cal-Mac and Western Ferry
The Cal-Mac (Caledonian and MacBraynes) Ferry left from the Dunoon pier shown below. The Western Ferry left from a small dock in Kirn, right below the Hunter Quay Hotel (see "pub crawl" on the main Holy Loch page).

From here you could catch the Cal-Mac Ferry to Gourock. It dropped you off just a short walk from the train that ran to Glasgow. Glasgow was pretty interesting, it was more of an industrial type city as compared to the touristy Edinburgh. Glasgow was also known to us Americans as the place where you could get something to eat at Burger King, McDonalds, Pizza Hut or Dunkin Donuts.
