Gendo Ikari
Gendo Ikari is the Chief commander of NERV and father of Shinji. He was born in 1976 and has been a key factor in all of the events dealing with the second impact and the angels. He was first seen in the series (timeline not first appearance in the episode list) When he listed Professor Kouzou Fuyutski as his counselor after being arrested for getting drunk and starting a fight (his name then was Gendo Rokubungi) ("My first impression of him was that he was a rogue bull on a short tether") . Fiutski later finds out that Gendo is seeing his star pupil, Yui Ikari. It is not sure at that point whether Gendo truely loved Yui or was just doing it for her intelligence. Gendo eaves the picture for a few years. He is presumed dead after the second impact because he was stationed with the Katsuragi research team (only Misato escaped that alive). It is later discovered that he for some reason left a few days before the event and escaped uninjured strangely enough with all of the research's files. He then is confronted with all this by Professor Fuyutski. In defense he decides to show him his secret... the underground Geofront and Ghern Headquaters along with Naoko Akagi, A renowned scientist. He then agrees to join Nerv as well. It is determined that Gendo will do anything to make the dead seas scroll's prophecy come true.; even if it entails murder, sabotage, or other unlawful activities. It is later discovered that if he does this it will allow him to see and be with his love Yui again.
