Rioji Kaji
Kaji is my second favorate character in the series next to Kensuke. I believe he is kind of like a fatherly figure for Shinji.
Kaji is Misato's old boyfriend and involved in special inspections at NERV. He is known for 2 things in preticular. 1.) He is a well known ladies man who constantly flirts with any girl that would give him the chance. 2.) He has been known to work for multiple companies at a time doing spy work which he believes is justified in his search for the truth. He came in the show in episode 8 while accompanying Asuka, eva-02, and the frozen remains of Adam. He then sees Misato again and once again falls in love with her. His (and her) feelings grow when Kaji comes to work for NERV. It is later discovered by Misato that he is also spying on NERV for the Japanese government. Misato lets him go (after he shows her what NERV is hiding from her). At this point they start seeing each other again as Misato admits she still has feelings for Kaji. She tells him the only reason she broke up with him to start with was because she was afraid she was falling in love with a man so much like her own father who she hates. At this point also it shows Kaji's other hobby: growing melons ^_^. He soon after gets his final mission ("It is red; same color as blood"). He has to Kidnap Commander fiyutski for SEELE. He only did it for his desire for the truth to be found. He soon after is shot to death by Misato for betraying NERV. She soon after finda a message at home on her answering machine from Kaji. In it he apologizes for everything he had done. He tells her his will. And in the end he simply says ("If we can meet again I will tell you the words I could not tell you years ago") (I love you). Right before his death he gives Misato a pill which later she uses to open up all the rooms including the dummy plug room with all the Rei clones inside.
