Shinji Ikari Is known as the "third child" and is also the son of Gendo Ikari, the commander in charge or Nerv and the Evas. Shinji is a lonely 14 year old partially because of the death of his mother when he was young and the soon after abandonment by his father. He also has hard times relating to others and making friendships. He lacks self confidence and sometimes seems cowardly. He also through the series battles depression more than he battle with the angels. He is the authorized pilot of Eva unit 1. His first time in the eva was against the 3rd angel and before that he had no prior training. Though he lacked experience with the Eva his synchronization ratio was well over 40 percent without training.
