Ethics in Love
True Lovers of the World, I ask,
Is there Ethics in Love,
and the declaration thereof?
For I would say, Yes.
At least in the world of unrequited love.
To tell him, I love you.
(Assuming a like-minded sensibility)
Would not that bestow guilt -
for not returning ardent love -
for allowing undue closeness -
And why put him through that?
Should not the heart be buried,
and send him sincere wishes
of love and joy and happiness.
To tell him, I need distance.
(Assuming some care for friendship)
Would not that give sadness -
for such inevitable loss -
for kindness to cause the loss again-
And why make him aware of that?
Should not fade slowly, naturally,
and send him sincere wishes
to forget insignificant passing.
True Lovers of the World, I ask,
Is there Ethics in Love,
and the actions within?
For I would say, Yes.
At least in the world of unrequited love.
Kiss, light and sweet,
to be given in senselessness.
Not to his pleasures obviously,
But a theft to extend a fantasy,
that which he does not share,
else it would be true.
And be it fleeting ecstasy,
why cause haunting pain as that?
Turn away, and leave him be.
Gift, charm or souvenir,
to be given in selfish regard.
Not to enrich his life - mind or heart,
But a token to force memories,
that which if he wished to remember,
his own token, he would have found.
And be it surely gone,
why allow unpleasantness as that?
Bury the charm, and forget him.
True Lovers of the World, I ask,
Is there Ethics in Love,
and the sentiments of all ?
For I would say, Yes.
At least in the world of unrequited love.
Love, all encompassing -
just beyond the selfish love once known.
His happiness above pain of longing,
is to surrender to one he shall love more.
No fight for his heart,
nor rights to care for it.
Unable to Love and Care best of the world,
not from one flawed as this.
For in that is the most ideal love of all.
Resign, the eventuality -
when the passionate storm subsides.
Healing - for happiness found,
would bring peace to him as well.
While some fondness forever remains,
tell the heart to wipe a clean slate.
Fairness dictates that
Givings of heart to One that returns love
must exceed the him that did not.
For in that is the most practical love of all.
True Lovers of the World, I ask,
Is there Ethics in Love?
And these philosophies in these verses,
describe that of ethical love?
And how for selfish and flawed mortal,
abide by such ideals?
I know not the answers,
for I am not a true lover of the world.
