Panthers Take The Lumber To Castator Fencing

September 8, 2000

Beeton – The bats were cracking on Thursday September 7 at the ball diamond as the Multi-Van Panthers defeated Castator Fencing 18-13 to capture the series two games to one.  The Panthers now move on to the South Simcoe Women’s Softball Association final series to play long-time rivals Alliston Volkswagen Beetles.

Early in the season the Panthers struggled to find their form until league MVP candidate, Donna Schouten, helped the team’s confidence with strong pitching.  With a solid pitcher in place, the Panthers regained their form of years past to move them into the playoffs with an 8-7-0 record.

Game One against Castator Fencing favored the Panthers 8-5 but they came short in Game Two 5-2 as Castator demonstrated why they finished first during the regular season with timely hitting and tight defense.  However, the crew from Beeton could not hold off the mighty Panthers’ offense in Game Three.

Congratulations to Castator Fencing on their outstanding regular season.  Castator led the league with 12-3-0 record.

The Panthers will meet the high octane offensive Alliston Volkswagen Beetles in the best of five final Tuesday September 12th at 9:00 pm at Keogh Park in Tottenham.  This is the Beetles second consecutive year at the big dance.  Last season the Bugs fell short to Castator Fencing and are looking to hoist the championship trophy this year.  The stands will be packed so make sure to reserve your seat early!

Beetles Move To The Big Show Again

September 6, 2000

Tottenham – For the second time in two years, the Alliston Volkswagen Beetles are on their way to the South Simcoe Women’s Softball Association Final with a 16-11 victory over Ivy.  The win clinched the best-of-three series and demonstrated a great deal of character for the Bugs.  Three two-out rallies and solid relief pitching by Lisa Allen help lead the Beetles to victory.

Beetles starting pitcher Nikki Mann struggled to find her zone but limited Ivy’s chances to strike early by pitching out of a first inning bases-loaded jam.  Sheri McBain jumpstarted the Bug’s offense by reaching base three times and stealing two bags.

Congratulations to Ivy for their outstanding season.  Ivy was by far the strongest team in the league for the second half and deserves a lot of credit for their solid play and sportsmanship.

The Beetles now await the winner between the Multi-Van Panthers and Castator Fencing series.

Castator Fights Back Against the Panthers!

September 6, 2000

Tottenham – Champions aren’t a fluke, they earn it.  That is what the defending SSWSA Champions Castator Fencing showed last night with a come-from-behind 5-2 victory over the Multi-Van Panthers.

First inning woes by Castator helped the Panthers jump out early with two runs but that was it for the cats as Castator’s pitcher, Janet Ross, threw smoke for the rest of the game and shut down the opposition.  Castator then jumped all over Panther’s starter and league MVP candidate, Donna Schouten, by scoring five runs to lead their team to victory.  The Panthers avoided a serious one-out bases-loaded jam in the third inning or else the score would have been larger for Castator.

The best-of-three series is now tied and the final game will be played Thursday September 7 at 8:30 pm in Beeton.

Beetles & Panthers Take Game One

September 1, 2000

Ivy – In a close, defensive battle, the Alliston Volkswagen Beetles captured the first game 4-3 against Ivy in the 2000 playoffs.  Veteran Ivy pitcher, PJ McIntosh, started and finished the game for her squad and held the Beetles to only four runs while pitching out of some jams early in the game.  Her counterpart, Beetles starting pitcher Nikki Mann battled the heat and humidity to hold off the Ivy bats.  Beetles MVP candidate, Kristy Hallem, closed the game for the Bugs to earn a save.

These two teams match up again on September 5th at Keogh Park in Tottenham at 7:00 pm.

Beeton – Regular season leaders, Castator Fencing, fell 8-5 to the Multi-Van Panthers in an exciting match-up.  Panthers MVP Candidate, Donna Schouten, pitched a strong game and held most of the opposition hitless.  Castator Thirdbaseman, Madelyne Rutledge, had a solid night at the plate going 4-4 while Panthers newcomer, Ruth Ann Broadhurst went 3-4 with a triple.

The next game is September 5th at Keogh Park in Tottenham at 9:00 pm.

Diggers Capture First Victory!

August 22, 2000

Alliston – For a team that has struggled to find its groove all season long, the Alliston Diggers (1-11-0) finally broke the win column with a classic 7-6 victory over the Midas Slickers (3-10-0).  1999 Diggers MVP, Connie Lee Prince, carried her team with the bat while 2000 MVP Candidate, Heather Jenkins led the defense.

Quite often this season, the Diggers have produced solid defensive outings but have lacked carrying some big sticks to the park.  Visiting teams will always comment that playing the Diggers is not always a guaranteed win.  Alliston Volkswagen Beetles Coach, Kevin Boston, remarked, “The Diggers are a very frustrating team to play.  They can sting you with their solid defense and rob you of so many base hits.”  With the addition of newcomers like Megan Harjung and Sarah Sandy, the Diggers can do some off-season roster tinkering and easily become a contender next year.

August 22, 2000

Ivy – After a slow start to the season, Ivy has come on strong in the second half to vault into second place with no looking back.  Ivy (10-4-0) has exploded for a league-leading 133 runs scored while limiting their opposition to only 63 runs.  Team confidence has been very apparent.  Confidence brings solid team performance and this team is on fire as the SSWSA regular season ends and playoffs begin.

Rumble In The Jungle – SSWSA Style

August 8, 2000

Tottenham – In a thrilling game that featured offensive, defense, timely hitting and lots of emotion, the Alliston Volkswagen Beetles (8-4-0) knocked off Castator Fencing (9-3-0) 7-5 in the bottom of the seventh inning at Keogh Park.

Throughout the entire game, both sides played outstanding defense.  Beetles starting pitcher, Kristy Hallem, mowed down the opposition with great location and zip on her pitches.  Her counterpart, Laurie Castator, equaled the performance with heat as she struck out four batters in three innings.

The Bugs led 3-1 until the top of the seventh when Castator Fencing rallied and cleared the bases with a monster shot to left field by Connie Fraser.  Fraser later scored to put the league leaders up 5-3 going into the bottom of the seventh.  However this did not stop the Beetles as Nikki Mann entered the game as a pinch hitter and drew a timely leadoff walk and scored on a Jo-Anne Love pinch hit.  Michel Bullock entered the game to add speed on the bases and was advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Sheri McBain.  Michel then scored to tie the game at five when Marlene McEachern delivered a one-out hit up the middle.  Hallem followed McEachern with a base hit to have runners at second and third with one out and the hot hitting Holly Mohr at the plate.  Mohr put the icing on the cake with a ripping double to score both runners and end the game 7-5.

Both teams square off again this Thursday night in Beeton at 8:30 pm.  The Beetles now only trail Castator Fencing by two points as they head into this game.

Slickers Mercied By Hot Ivy / Diggers Battle Beetles Hard

August 3, 2000

During their recent game on August 1st, Ivy (8-4-0) defeated the Midas Slickers (3-8-0) 13-3 after six full innings.  The Slickers were missing League MVP candidate, Kelly Verner and despite the efforts of fellow League MVP, Michelle Carmichael, the team could not manufacture enough run support to battle Ivy.

Kim Rix continued to show her late season blossoming as a defensive specialist with her Defensive Player of the Game vote while Sharon McMaster led the team in the offensive categories.

Ivy remains in second place and two points ahead of the Alliston Volkswagen Beetles (7-4-0) who defeated the Alliston Diggers 5-3 that same night.  The Beetles are tied with the Multi-Van Panthers (7-5-0) in points but lead in plus/minus statistics (37-31 respectively).

As mentioned earlier, the Beetles defeated the Diggers 5-3 at Keogh Park.  1999 Team MVP, Connie Lee Prince of the Diggers, pitched a beautiful game limiting the League’s highest offensive unit to five runs.  Connie Lee continually forced the Beetles to strand runners all night long while her defense came up strong when called upon.  Third baseman, Meagan Harjung, made an amazing play to rob Beetles’ first baseman, Lisa Williams, of a base hit when she dove to her right and threw the ball to first to make the play.  However, a late-game rally by the Beetles saw them score a couple of runs to make it 5-3.  “The Professional Pitcher,” Lisa Allen, came in to close the game for starter Nikki Mann earning another save this season.  Next week proves to be a tough test for the Bugs when they play three games (one against the Slickers and two versus Castator Fencing).

Ivy Downs Beetles

July 27, 2000

Ivy – Failing to lose two straight to the Alliston Volkswagen Beetles (6-4-0), Ivy (7-4-0) played a solid game to defeat the Beetles 10-1 tonight.  Led by the crafty pitching of Vicki Hock, Ivy carefully placed their hits and ran the bases well all night long.  The Beetles lead the league in runs scored this year but Hock’s pitching limited the Bugs to just one run.  The low offensive production was the first time the Beetles have only scored one run.

Ivy now jumps into second place trailing Castator Fencing by four points.  Notable mentions in this game go to Kim Rix of Ivy who played a sound game at shortstop, and to Kelly Breedon Elliott who contributed with the bat.

Balanced Team Effort Defeats Panthers

July 25, 2000

Tottenham – In a battle between long-time rivals, the Alliston Volkswagen Beetles defeated the Multi-Van Panthers 11-8 at Keogh Park tonight.

The Beetles had their chances early in the game to pounce on the Panthers but failed to capitalize due to the solid defensive play of the opposition.  The game remained close until the fifth inning when the Beetles rallied against the crafty Panthers’ pitcher Laurie Maher.  Nikki Mann had another solid start for the Beetles and League MVP Candidate, Kristy Hallem performed well in relief for Mann.  The Panthers tried to start a comeback in the top of the seventh inning but Beetles’ ace, Lisa Allen came in to pitch and close the door notching a save for her.

Hats off to the Panthers for their fine defensive work tonight.  Denice McKibbon played a great game in centrefield with strong throws and great catches.  Patrice Carradonna robbed Hallem in the fourth inning with a leaping catch at shortstop to rob Hallem of her laser shot.

This game had an effect on the league standings as the Beetles leapfrogged Ivy and the Panthers to move into second place behind league leaders, Castator Fencing.  With only a few more regular season games to go in the season, this will be a tight race to the top for many teams.

Stretch Run Gets Tense!

July 24th, 2000

Tottenham - Each season the standings in the South Simcoe Women’s Softball Association (SSWSA) are tight and this year it is no different.

Castator Fencing of Beeton (9-2-0) leads the way with 18 points followed by Ivy (6-4-0) and the Multi-Van Panthers (6-4-0) with 12 points each.  However, Ivy remains second in the standings due to their plus/minus record of +22.  Trailing the three leaders is the Alliston Volkswagen Beetles (5-3-0) with 10 points but with two games in hand of the Panthers and Ivy and three games in hand of Castator Fencing.  Unfortunately the Midas Slickers (2-7-0) have not found their groove this year despite the valiant efforts of team MVPs Michelle Carmichael and Kelly Verner.  At the bottom of the league is the high-spirited Alliston Diggers (0-8-0).

Offense has been the key for a few teams this year especially the Alliston Volkswagen Beetles and Castator Fencing.  The Bugs exploded this year with 104 runs scored in eight games for an average of 13 runs per game!  Meanwhile, Castator Fencing also has 104 runs scored but in 11 games for an average of 9.5 runs per game.  These two teams are also high on their defense with Castator leading the way with a +47 record and the Bugs at close +41.

Also close this year is the race for Most Valuable Player.  Every year this race can go to the wire and it looks like it will be decided that way once again.  Michelle Carmichael (Midas Slickers), Kelly Verner (Midas Slickers) and Laurie Castator (Castator Fencing) lead the pack with six votes each.  League rookie, Donna Schouten (Multi-Van Panthers) played in five games but has been selected as an MVP in each of those matches!  Schouten is tied with Mary Parsons (Castator Fencing) and Belinda Zeggil (Alliston Diggers) at five votes each.

So once again, the SSWSA is proving to be among the best sporting events and activities in the area.  Every year it is always a race for the top.  Games are normally played on Tuesday and Thursday evening from 7:00 pm at Keogh Park (Tottenham), McLean (Alliston), Beeton Fairgrounds or in Ivy.

All of this information plus much more can be viewed on the SSWSA Official Website at www.oocities.org/sswsa.  Weekly news and statistical updates are posted on the web for easy access 24 hours a day from anywhere in the world!  Check it out, it’s more than just a game!!

Beetles Get Crunched In Ivy

July 4th, 2000

Ivy – In a disastrous game for the Alliston Volkswagen Beetles, Ivy beat the bugs into the ground 18-5 in five innings of play.  Defense was something the Beetles could not spell tonight as they made 10 errors that allowed 12 unearned runs.  Beetles’ pitching was hung out to dry by their players in an important game in the standings.  The win by Ivy leap-frogged them over the Bugs to put them into second place.  Spirits on the Ivy bench were high after they spanked their opposition with their bats all night long.  The victory was crucial for Ivy after they suffered a defeat at the hands of the new-look Slickers on June 27 11-6.

Beetles Dig Into Their Opponents

July 3, 2000

Alliston – The bats exploded for a few innings for the Alliston Volkswagen Beetles as they defeated the Alliston Diggers 18-2 at McLean Diamond on June 27.  The Bug’s big bat was Kristy Hallem.  Hallem reached base every time including a two run home run in the 5th inning.  While the score seems lop-sided, the Beetles were lucky to have two good offensive innings.  The Diggers’ pitching duo of all-star Connie Lee Prince and Heather Jenkins held the Beetles to many ground balls and weak hits to the infield.

The good news for the Beetles came when 1999 Team MVP Lisa Allen returned from injury to play her first game of the season.  While looking a little rusty at times, Lisa said she was glad to be back playing.

Game notes included an outstanding catch by Diggers’ centerfielder Connie Lee Prince and solid pitching by the Beetles’ starter, Nikki Mann.  In four games this season the Alliston Volkswagen Beetles have scored an amazing 60 runs, that is an average of 20 runs per game!

Softball Skills Clinic Spots Open

July 2, 2000

Hello,

My name is Danielle Penner. I am the Assistant Softball Coach at California

 June 19, 2000

Beeton - Despite the unusual amount of rain for this time of year, Beeton’s Castator Fencing continues to demonstrate their strong offensive and defensive skills with their own thunder and lightening.  Leading the league with four wins and zero losses, these girls are pounding the ball with 41 runs scored while only allowing 14 runs against.  Opposing teams will find it difficult to crack this team as they attempt back-to-back-to-back championships.

Diggers’ Star Shines Against Slickers

 June 19, 2000

Alliston – Alliston Diggers’ offensive star Jill Galbraith did all she could in a 9-7 loss to the Midas Slickers on June 6 at McLean Diamond.  Jill hammered a homerun that found its way to the fence and scored two runs.  The Diggers claimed it was an “awesome hit” but the end result was not so great as the Diggers fell to 0-4-0 on the season.  Diggers’ fans are still waiting for last year’s Team MVP Connie Lee Prince to show her hot stick she had in 1999.  Other notable mentions from this game include Karen Blake’s solid defensive performance and the strong bat of Slickers’ shortstop Michelle Carmichael.

Beetles Solve Slickers

May 30, 2000

Tottenham - The Alliston Volkswagen Beetles topped the Slickers 12-6 at Keogh Park tonight with the help of solid team play.  Starting pitcher Nikki Mann struggled with her control early but settled down to capture the win for the Beetles.  Offensive gem Kristy Hallem laced a some nice hits off Slickers' pitcher Kelly Verner.  The Slickers' offense was provided by the steady Michele Carmichael with a number of big hits and fast running.  Both teams played very well but only one team can be a winner.

Rain Delays Week Two Action

May 24, 2000

Tottenham - As the heavens opened with pouring rain, Umpires were forced to postpone all games on Tuesday May 23.  The risk of injury on a very slick field greatly increased with the downpour.  Games are to be rescheduled for a later date.

SSWSA Is Back For The Attack!

May 20, 2000

Tottenham - With a new Executive Board in place led by first year President Laurie Casatator, the Association will once again show why this is one of the best forms of entertainment and athleticism in the area.  For the past few seasons the final league standings have not been determined until the last game of the season leaving everybody in suspense.

Beeton Castator Fencing captured the league championship over the Alliston Volkswagen Beetles but will have their hands full with the Bugs this year.  With key roster moves in the off-season, the Beetles are focused to capture the title they have coveted for so long.  But don't forget the rest of the league.  Every other team in this league is a threat and will not let anybody else take the title without a fight.

If you are a baseball fan you will not want to miss any of these games.  Game days are on Tuesday and Thursday evenings in Alliston, Beeton, Ivy and Tottenham.  It will be a battle right to the end but it will also be a great time for the players and fans!

Players and Fans Check Out Stats On-Line

May 20, 2000

Tottenham - This marks the second season for the South Simcoe Women's Softball Association (SSWSA)'s official website.  Last season players, fans and coaching staff were able to surf the internet to view the latest statistics, schedules and Association news.  This season the site is back and with a new web address (www.oocities.org/sswsa).

League Standings and statistics including individual leaders in offensive and defensive categories will be posted live to the web.  "It was a hot item last season," explains League Statistician Kevin Boston, "We had so many visits to the site by people wanting to see who was leading in pitching strikeouts or batting average.  It was great!"  By posting the statistics to the site help create an additional interest to the league.

Teams are encouraged to submit the game statistics with their game sheets.  Revised game sheets were printed this year to add statistical categories.  All completed games sheets are submitted to the League Statistician and then posted to the web.  "It does not take that long to do," said Boston.  "As long as people submit the information it is all inputted into the computer and the calculations are automatically done."

So by the end of the season not only the hunt for first place will be coming, there will also be a battle to see who reigns as top dog in stats!
