Bill is survived by Marcella his loving wife of 29 years; 5 daughters, Mary (Joe) Glasson of L’Anse, Patricia (Mike) Gauthier of Baraga, Monica (Ken) Lantzy of Carrolltown, PA., Carol (John) Sterbenz of Aura, and Jane (Chuck) Thelen of Ovid, MI., 2 sons, Glen (Marlene) Vadnais of Murphy, N.C. and Dale (Celia) Vadnais of L’Anse; 1 step daughter, Susan (Wesley) Laitila, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, 2 sisters, Leona Kozma and his twin, Dorothy Proulx. Special friends Raymond Brodbeck and Dan Lazzari also survive. He was preceded in death by his brother, Francis and stepson, Dale Kunick.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 5, 2004, with Father Chacko as Celebrant. Spring interment in the Baraga Cemetery. Baraga County Area Veterans, under the direction of the Baraga American Legion Post 444 conducted military honors followed by a rosary service conducted by the Knights of Columbus. The family would like to send a special thank you to the wonderful hospice care that Mr. Vadnais received from Baraga County Home Care and Hospice. The Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse was entrusted with arrangements.

He was born in Hancock, MI. on March 11, 1910 son of the late Dominic and Margaret (Downey) Clisch. David lived in Alston until 1938 when he moved to Baraga with his family. He was employed as a woods worker for 40 years and then worked for the Pettibone Corporation for 10 years, retiring in 1975. David married the former Rose Ellenich on November 11, 1933 at Assinins Mission Church. He was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church and served as the church custodian for many years. David was especially fond of spending time with his many grandchildren . In his younger years he enjoyed fishing, gardening, playing cards, and reading.

Mr. Clisch is survived by his loving wife, Rose; children, Gerald (Shirley) Clisch of Baraga, Father Norman Clisch of Iron River, MI., Paul (Helen) Clisch of Baraga, Thomas (Mary Kay) Clisch of Baraga, and Roland Clisch of Baraga, Colleen (Thomas) Armstrong, of Milwaukee, WI., and Lisa (James) Mantila of Ishpeming, MI.; 28 grandchildren, and 46 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Roger in 1998 and daughter-in-law Shirley Clisch in 2001, one brother and four sisters.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 26, 2005 from St. Anne’s Catholic Church, Baraga. Father Norm Clisch will be the celebrant and Father Chacko will con-celebrate. Spring interment will take place in the Baraga Cemetery, and his grandchildren will honor him as casket bearers. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 25, 2005 from 5 until 8 p.m.at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse, and for 1 hour prior to the Mass at the church on Wednesday. A parish prayer service will be recited at the funeral chapel at 7:30 p.m Tuesday. The Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse has been entrusted with arrangements.

He was born in Pelkie, MI. on July 1, 1919 son of the late Henry and Anna (Wiik) Takalo. Arne attended the Hamar and Pelkie schools and graduated from Baraga High School in 1937 where he excelled in football, track and basketball He was a veteran of the U.S.Army. Arne attended Michigan State University majoring in Agriculture. Until his retirement, Arne was a machinist for Tangen Fabricating in Baraga. He always had a deep love for farming throughout his life .

On July 23, 1949 he married the former Frances J. Thomas at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Baraga. She preceded him in death on January 28, 2001. Arne was a member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church, Baraga American Legion Post 444 , the Michigan Farm Bureau, Baraga Senior Citizens, former Director of The Pelkie Cemetery Association, the Pelkie All School Reunion committee. His leisure interests included league bowling, playing cards and he enjoyed playing the mandolin.

Mr. Takalo is survived by his loving children; Roger (Janet) Takalo of Pensacola, FL., Linda (Gary) Wadaga of Baraga, and Barbara (Randy) Trudeau of Marquette, grandchildren; Jason, Kendra and Brandon Turunen, Rachel Takalo, and Gabrielle Trudeau, great-grandchildren; Payton, Carter and Lindsey; a sister Helen Laurila of Redford, MI. six brothers preceded him in death.

Malvie LeClaire, 87, of Baraga, passed away on Saturday, October 9, 2004, at Bayside Village in L'Anse.

He was born February 15, 1917, in Baraga, son of the late Hildege and Delia (Sirard) LeClaire. Malvie grew up in Baraga.

He married the former Mary Miron on November 27, 1943 in Detroit. In 1949, they moved to Oregon with his logging business and after a few years moved back to Baraga. Malvie owned and operated LeClaire Logging Inc. and Malvie LeClaire Construction Co. up until 1978 when he retired. He was fundamental in developing Pettibone and the Moyer Medical Clinic in the area.

Malvie also served on the Board of Directors at Superior National Bank and was a Financial Director for the Trust Department.

Malvie was a member of St. Ann's Church and the Knights of Colubus. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and golfing. A distinct characteristic that Malvie was known for was his laugh. It was an infectious enjoyable sound that lightened everyone's heart.

Surviving are his wife, Mary of Baraga; son, Dr. John (Lisa) LeClaire of Muskegon, daughter, Fran (Len) Pickett of Kingford; six grandchildren, Brian,, Andrew, and Sara LeClaire, Shaun (Kyra) Pickett, Shannon (Jeff) Powell, and Michael Pickett; three great-grandchildren, Audra, Eva and Scott Pickett.

Preceding him in death were his brothers, Alfred, Clifford, Leo, Melford and Rudolph "Pat" LeClaire; sisters, Anna Arnal, Mildred Langell and Yvonne Miron.

The Funeral Mass of Christian Burial was held on October 16, at St. Ann's Catholic church in Baraga. Fr. Antony officiated with burial in the Baraga Cemetery.

Pallbearers were his grandsons, Brian and Andrew LeClaire, Shaun and Michael Pickett, and nephews, Doug LeClaire and Greg Miron.

He was born November 9, 1932 in Keweenaw Bay, Michigan son of the late Victor and Katherine (Niemi) Maki. Paul was raised in L’Anse and graduated from L’Anse High School in 1951. During his high school years he excelled in sports, especially football. He was a Master Sgt. in the US Army National Guard and a member of the American Legion Post 444 in Baraga. Paul married the former Phyllis Ellenich on February 19, 1955 at St. Ann’s Church in Baraga. He worked as an engineer for Pettibone for 35 years, retiring in 1985. Paul and his wife owned and operated the Side Track Bar in Baraga from 1984-1995. He worked for a few years with Bay Ambulance when it first got started. From 1967-84 he was with the Baraga Volunteer Fire Department. Paul enjoyed fishing hunting, football, hardball, softball, and was voted as the Baraga County All Time Softball Player. He was a member of St. Ann’s Church and the Knights of Columbus.

Surviving are his wife Phyllis of Baraga; sons Paul (Dawn) Maki, Jeffrey (Michelle) of Vero Beach, FL; daughters, Sandra (Lance) Forcia of L’Anse, Patti (Bill) Gauthier of Baraga, Vicki (Paul) Mayfield of Dallas, TX, Lori (Scott) Nicklas of Baraga; brother John (Sonja) Maki of L’Anse; 19 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death is an infant son David; brothers, Elmer and Jacob Maki; sisters, Esther Artibe, Ruth Kemppainen, and Lempi Maki.

The Knights of Columbus said the Rosary at 7:30 pm followed by a presentation by the Baraga Volunteer Fire Dept. The Funeral Mass of Christian Burial was held on Thursday at 11:00 am at St. Ann's Church in Baraga. Fr. Norm Clisch officiated. Burial in the Baraga Cemetery. The Baraga Area Veterans under the direction of the American Legion Post 444 conducted graveside military services.

He was born May 4, 1932 in Baraga, MI son of the late Wilfred and Selma (Alatalo). Raymond graduated from Baraga High School in 1950. He was in the Army Airborne Green Beret during the Korean Conflict. Raymond married the former Mary Ann Wadaga on October 6, 1956 at St. Ann’s in Baraga.

Ray was the store manager at Gambles store in L’Anse from 1955 until 1998 when he retired. He was an avid rabbit hunter and deer hunter. Raymond was well known for his wild game cooking. He loved to fish and boat with his son Jim and smoke fish. Raymond was a member of St. Ann’s Parish Council, American Legion Post 444 in Baraga, MI Nat’l Guard in Baraga, Lumber Jack Committee and coordination of the Night Shirt Parade, the Santa Claus for Baraga Senior Citizen Housing Commission, stand by Fireman in Baraga, the Men’s Bowling League at the Grandville and was the 1969-70 League Champion for Pettibone.

Mr. Stark is survived by his sister, Edith Lindgren of Zephrhills, FL. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 7, 2004 from St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Baraga with Father Jamie Ziminski officiating. Interment took place in the Baraga Cemetery. A parish prayer service was held at the funeral chapel Sunday evening at 7 p.m.

A Memorial Mass of Christian burial for Lori was held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 7, 2004, from St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Baraga with Father Greg Heikkala officiating. The family received friends at the church on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until time of the service. Following the service friends were invited to join the family for fellowship and luncheon at the church. She was born April 15, 1918 in Baraga daughter to the late John and Matilda (Auge) Cadeau. She attended Baraga Schools and was a life long area resident. Madeline married Lawrence J. Vizina Jr. on November 8, 1941. She was employed as a home health care worker for a short time. She enjoyed handwork. Madeline was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church and a former member of St. Ann’s Altar Society.

Surviving are her son, James (Diane) Vizina of Ft. Pierce, FL; daughter, Barbara (Gale) Eilola of Pelkie, MI; eight grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Preceding her in death is her husband Lawrence; brothers John B., Wilfred, Dennis, John J., and Adolphus Cadeau; sisters, Virginia Vizina, Rose Cadeau, Leona Cadeau, and Mary Eva Haara.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Baraga on Wednesday, April 7. Fr. Jamie Ziminski officiated. Burial will be in the Baraga Cemetery. The Jacobson Funeral Home in L’Anse is assisting the family.

WILLIAM “BILL” H. MAYO, 84, of Baraga, passed away Sunday, September 7, 2003 at the Franciscan Rehabilitation Center in Appleton, WI., following a period of ill health. He was born in Baraga, MI. on March 14, 1919 son of the late William H. and Albina (Foucault) Mayo. Bill attended Baraga High School and was very active in sports. He married the former Marguerite “Marcy” Bohmier on October 29, 1938 in Assinins, MI. Bill worked for the Ford Motor Company in L’Anse, LaCourt Gas Company of Baraga and later was co-owner of the frozen food lockers of Baraga. In 1961 he went to work for the Pettibone Corporation. He worked as receiving and office manager until his retirement in 1983. Bill served as Village Mayor for 4 years and was instrumental in bringing the Superior National Bank Branch into Baraga. He was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church, St. Kateri Church, Keweenaw Bay Indian Community, St. Ann’s Parish Custodian, and Baraga Land Senior Citizens. He was a former Baraga County Commissioner, and school board member. Bill will be remembered for his humor during his bartending days, his athletic abilities all through high school and on into his twilight years. He loved to play baseball, basketball and horseshoes. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing cards. His greatest passion, however, was spending time with his family.

Mr. Mayo is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Marguerite “Marcy”, sons; James (Rose Marie “Suzie”) Mayo, and Gary (Jeannine) Mayo both of Baraga, daughters; Marcia (Curt) Lindstrom of Stevens Point., WI., Karen (Mickey) Keck, Mary Ellen Patovisti and Alice Maki all of Neenah, WI., 26 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, brother; Clarence Snell of Jamestown, N.C., sister, Stella Marie Baril of Grosse Pointe Shores, MI. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by two grandchildren, one great-grandchild and one sister.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, September 11, 2003 from St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Baraga with Father James Ziminski, celebrant. Interment took place in the Baraga Cemetery. The family received friends Wednesday September 10, 2003 from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse, with a parish prayer service at 6:00 p.m. and a visitation at the church Thursday, September 11 from 10:00 a.m. until time of service.

She was born August 11, 1919 in Baraga, daughter to the late Fred and Edna (Buhmier) Rose. Jeanette married William Voskuhl in March of 1947 in Baraga. She worked for Elms Country Market and Wilkinson's General Store for many years.

Jeanette was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, sewing, cooking, and baking.

She is survived by her sons, Bill (Gayle) Voskuhl, Tom (Mary Ann) Voskuhl both of L'Anse; daughters, Judy (Tom) Whaley of Yuma, AZ, Rose (Bruce) Ekdahl of Ishpeming, RaNae Voskuhl of California; eight grandchildren, Libby, Jim, Shawn, Michele, Will, Tricia, Darrin, Stacey; eight great grandchildren; a special friend, Gloria Darcy of Baraga; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Jeanette is preceded in death by her husband Bill on December 14, 1999, and sisters Antoinette Myren and Lorraine Schiele.

A memorial mass was be held on Monday, September 16 at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Baraga at 10:00 a.m. Fr. George Joseph officiated.

She was born July 21, 1900 in Baraga, daughter of Henry and Olevina (Foucault) Ross. She graduated from Baraga High School. She married William Mili on September 12, 1922 at Most Holy Name of Jesus Mission Church in Assinins. They owned and operated Bill's Tavern in Alston until 1947. Then they moved to Detroit for ten years before returning to Baraga. Mili taught school for three years and was the Village Treasurer for two terms. Dora was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church and St. Ann's Altar Society. She enjoyed crocheting, painting and liked flowers.

Mrs. Mili is survived by her son, William (Patricia) Mili of L'Anse, two sisters, Myrtle Maloney and Phyllis Olson both of Baraga; grandson Thomas Mili of L'Anse; two great grandchildren, Patricia Mili of Marquette, Michele (Dan) Kowalski of Houghton; numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband William in 1983; grandson David Mili; sister, Evelyn Payne, Flora Harter, Ruby Vaughn; and brother Francis Ross.

A funeral mass was held on Thursday, Aug. 29 at 11 AM at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Baraga.Fr. George Joseph officiating. Burial in the Baraga Cemetery.

She was born on Sept 27, 1912, in Baraga, daughter of Joseph and Alma (Anderson) Miron. She married Melford LeClaire on June 8, 1935 at the Mission in Assinins. She was a wonderful, loving wife, mother and grandmother and was devoted to her family. She worked tirelessly providing comforts to them. She was a wonderful cook and baker. She made the best bread in the world.

Rita found joy and beauty in the simple things of life such as taking rides in the woods, picking berries, gardening and bird watching. She was a caring and gentle spirit who enjoyed life. She made time for each and every one of her children and grandchildren. To her every one of them was special and she meant everything to them. Her smile would light up a room. She will be deeply and profoundly missed.

Rita was a devoted Catholic and a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church.

She is survived by four sons, James (Carol) of L'Anse, Leonard, Douglas, and Paul all of Baraga; five daughters, Kathryn (Lance) Heikkinen, Mary (Gary) Glover,Lorraine (Raymond) Maki, Joanne LeClaire all of Baraga, Carol (Stewart) Hamacher of Norway, daughter-in-law Dar LeClaire of Ohio; son-in-law Richard Hiltunen of Baraga; one sister, Mary Frances (Malvie) LeClaire of Baraga; three brothers, Lester (Eva) Miron of Baraga, Joseph (Mary) Miron of Traverse City, Rodger (Judy) Miron of Baraga; 20 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Mrs. LeClaire is preceded in death by her husband Melford; sons, Joe and Peter LeClaire; daughter, Charlene Hiltunen; four brothers, Raymond, Earl, Donald and Louie Miron; one sister Norma Ross.

The funeral Mass of Christian Burial was Monday, March 25, 2002, at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Baraga. Fr. George Joseph officiated. Burial in the Baraga Cemetery.

She was born in Nisula on November 7, 1935, a daughter of Matthias and Martha (Niemi) Saari. A lifetime resident of the area, Shirley graduated from Baraga High School in 1953. On February 6, 1954, she married Roger Clisch in Detroit. He preceded her in death in 1998.

Shirley was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Baraga and the American Legion Post 444 Auxiliary in Baraga. She enjoyed working in her garden, cooking for her family and others, doing crafts, reading, and above all, being with her grandchildren.

Shirley is survived by four sons, R. David (Becky) of Goose Creek, S.C. Michael (Lara)of Ishpeming, Patrick (Tammy) of Champion and Todd of Alston; seven daughters, Peggy (William) Niemi of East Amherst, N.Y., Rose (Jesse) Perry of Ishpeming, Jody (Mickey) Salmi of Ishpeming, Cheryl (Dennis)Isotalo of Ishpeming, Susan (Craig) Sundblad of Lake Linden, Nancy (Rick) Hebert of Ishpeming and Marty (Daniel) Nurmela of Baraga. She is also survived by 26 grandchildren; two sisters, Verna (Tom) Ross of Alston and Evelyn Bergerson of Baraga. In addition, numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives survive. She was preceded in death by three brothers; and two sisters.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 11 A.M., Saturday, February 2, 2002, from St. Ann's Catholic Church in Baraga. Fr. Norm Clisch was the celebrant with Fr. George Joseph con-celebrating. Spring interment in the Alston Cemetery.

The family recieved friends at St. Ann's Catholic Church on Friday, February 1st from 5:30 until 8 PM and for one hour prior to the Mass on Saturday. The American Legion Post 444 Auxiliary offered a prayer service at 6:30 PM Friday followed by parish prayers at 7 PM. The Reid Funeral Service and Chapel in L'Anse assisted the family with arrangements.

He was born in Houghton on March 5, 1911, son of Edward and Aldea (Mongrain) Gauthier. Rudy attended St. Ignatius Catholic School in Houghton. He was an altar boy for 18 years and a soloist in Houghton and St. Ann's Catholic Church, Baraga. He was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church.

Mr. Gauthier married Florentia Girard on August 26, 1931. She preceded him in death in 1979.

Rudolf was a cook at the Doughlas House in Houghton for several years. He then went to work for the Soo Railroad Line, advancing to engineer until he retired in 1976 after 30 years of service. Rudolf was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. He was a member of Houghton Fire Department and the Eagles Club in Hancock until his move to Baraga. He resided in Baraga for over 46 years.

He is survived by his children, Edward (Judy) Gauthier of Owatonna, MN, Joseph (Margaret) Gauthier also of Owatonna, MN. Mary Pearce of Deford, MI, Betty Kay (Harlan) Fish of Baraga; 21 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; one sister, Margarite Meyer of Michigan City, IN. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Florentia, daughter, Therese Belhumer; grandson, Joseph; three brothers, Ed, Art, Paul; and two sisters, Aldea "Babe" Welch and Florence Schumaker.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Wednesday, November 14, 2001 at 11 AM from St. Ann's Catholic Church in Baraga. Fr. George Joseph was the celebrant. Interment in the Baraga Cemetery. His grandchildren honored him as casket beares.

He was born in Baraga, June 1, 1947, son of Wilfred and Selma (Alatalo) Dompier. He attended Baraga Area Schools. Chip married the Bonnie Koykka on March 17, 1986, in Las Vegas, NV.

Richard learned his life skill as butcher at the former Beck's Store in Baraga and later worked at Larry's Market for over 36 years. Chip was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church, Baraga. He was also a member of the Lions Club serving as past King Lion and the American Legion Baraga Post 444. He was one of the founders of the Baraga Lumberjack Days, and served as chief of the Baraga Fire Department retiring after 30 years. He started "Chip's Kids" through the fire department, a fire safety education program in the schools and for senior citizens. He was a member of the National Guard, retiring after 22 years of service. He was a member of the Baraga County Housing Commission. He was a volunteer ambulance driver and an organizer, coach and manager of Baraga Little League. He played on the Baraga fast pitch softball team.

Chip was an avid rabbit hunter and ice fisherman. His leisure activities included attending auctions and yard sales. He and his family enjoyed traveling and camping. His passion was food, both butchering and preparing meals. He and his wife Bonnie were widely known for their catering business. He cooked for the National Guard and is remembered as chef of the annual St. Ann's Hunter Supper. The Detroit Lions blue and silver was his other life passion. Chip was the Lion's most loyal UP fan.

Richard is survived by his loving wife Bonnie, three sons; Chad at home, Bill of Grand Rapids, and Tom at MSU in East Lansing; daughters, Jennifer of Grand Rapids, Amy of Chesterfield, MI; five brothers, Ray (Mary Ann), James (Doris), Jerry (Diane), and Wendell all of Baraga, Douglas (Irene) of Spokane, WA; sister, Mary Jane (Melvin) LaJoye of Hastings, sister-in-law, Phyllis of Gaylord; mother-in-law, Vi Karvakko, of Baraga; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jerry and Peggy Danis of Las Vegas; and numerous aunts, nieces, and nephews also survive.
