The Society was founded as a means of cooperation between the faculties of genuine Orthodox Philosophical and Theological Seminaries and Schools, as well as individual Theologians, whose aim it is:
~ Constantly working to restore Christ as the head of the Church
~ Rejecting the apocalyptic super-church idea of Orthodox pseudo-papacy and ecclesial elitism
~ Renewing Christ's Church as it was intended to be: Simply Orthodox in faith and practice.
WELCOME!
St. Ephrem Orthodox Philosophical-Theological Society (SEOPTS) welcomes as members Orthodox Christians around the globe who are teaching theology at an institution of higher learning, or are engaged in theological work and research. Each member of the Society holds at least a Bachelor's Degree in Theology (or its equivalent), or a Master's Degree in Philosophy, or has completed significant additional graduate studies in Theology or Philosophy.
Individuals who fit these membership requirements and would like to join SEOPTS, should contact the Society for a membership application. There are no membership fees. Support for the Annual Meeting and Lecture is encouraged through individual donations.
Definition
SEOPTS is an academic society of Orthodox Theologians and Philosophers, in order to promote genuine Orthodox theology, according to the Orthodox Canons, not modern-day church politics. In spite of some differences, SEOPTS cultivates fellowship, goodwill and cooperation among Orthodox Christians of any jurisdiction.
Affiliation
SEOPTS was organized under the auspices of the St. Elias School of Orthodox Theology, whose aim it is to promote the Orthodox faith through education and witness. Members of SEOPTS may thus be part of any Orthodox entity.
Annual Meeting
The annual meeting is generally open to the public, unless the meeting planners decide to close a particular session. The lecture is a public event. The business meeting of the Society is for members only. Every year, the members of SEOPTS plan an annual meeting to discuss various topics of concern. Planned topics are concerns ranging from contemporary theological eclecticism to canonical matters in Orthodox Ecclesiology. When deemed appropriate, the Society will issue statements and resolutions on the various topics. The Annual Meeting of the Society may be scheduled at any time. Highlight of the meeting is the Annual Lecture given by one of the members.
