I wake up to the sound of yelling and the stomping of feet.

“I can’t find my fucking black socks!” It’s my Aunt Kathleen.

“Well, how about we get another pair of black socks.” My Aunt Dolores answers.

“No! I want my pair of black socks!” Aunt Kathleen yells again. I hear footsteps and a door slam. I look at my clock and it says, ‘6:15’ I sit up and swing my legs over the edge of the bed, take a deep breath and walk out of my room.

“Did we wake you? I’m so sorry. Aunt Kathleen lost one of her black socks.”

I nod; unable to speak because it’s too early for me to function and I tend to stay quiet when I am rudely awakened at such an ungodly hour by relatives invading, sorry, staying in my apartment.

“Would you like some coffee?”

I nod again. My cat Jack rubs against my shin and looks up at me as if to say, “When are these people leaving our house mommy?” I pick him up and kiss him. He purrs and snuggles into my arms.

I hear loud footsteps again. It’s my Aunt Kathleen, ready for more ranting. “I am never staying here again! My black sock is gone!”

I mumble under my breath, “No one invited you to stay here in the first place.”
