1. First of all, make
some banners (468*60 pixels) and some buttons
(88*31 pixels) with your site name, your web
site address, and maybe a short description or some pictures. Save the
pictures as JPEG (.jpg) or GIF (.gif) files.
2. Work out some HTML
coding that other people can put on their page, with your image included,
to advertise your site. Include a link to the "Link
to us!" page somewhere on your site, displaying the code.
3. Tune up your site.
Make sure your HTML is good, your images and links work, and that it looks
okay in both Netscape and Internet Explorer browsers.
4. Join LinkExchange,
and submit your banner. The sooner you submit it, the sooner it will become
part of the rotation. Put a LinkExchange banner displayer on as many of your own pages
as possible too, because the more times you show their banners, the more
often they will show yours.
5. Join the
GeoGuide Banner exchange (if you have a GeoCities page). Make sure you
have the GeoGuide at the *top* of your main pages, submit a banner to advertise
your site (or have a helpful Geo homesteader make one for you), and your
banner will be shown in the rotation of banners appearing on the
GeoGuide. Just think: your banner shows up
on sites all over GeoCities!
6. The next time you're
in a chat room or on a message board, mention your website. Word of mouth is the best advertising. Just do it
once otherwise people may get annoyed and you may
be kicked out due to spamming.
7. Meta tags:
Make sure each of your main pages have meta tags, so the search engines
can find you. Submit your URL to Yahoo, Altavista, Webcrawler, HotBot,
AOL Netfind, Excite, and any other major search engines. There are lots
of great "Submit all at once" services available for free. Look around
for a good one. 8. Tell all of your
friends and family about your site. Word of mouth is a BIG advertiser.
9. Send your URL to
local newspaper editors. Many newspapers regularly review, mention, or
feature unique or topical websites in their technology columns. You don't know unless you try!
10. Join a webring.
Or seventeen of them! Amazingly, these really bring a lot of traffic to your
site. Also, rather than have a big webring page, put one on each page,
at the bottom, and make the webring related to the content on that page.
11. Visit people's
sites and sign their guestbooks, and include your image in your comments.
Many people surf via their guestbooks, and it's a great way to advertise.
12. E-mail webmasters
you know and ask them if they would like to banner exchange, or if they
have a links page they could add your link to. Always be friendly and courteous.
13. Make your URL
shorter. This will make it easier for people to return to your site.
14. Hold a contest
on your site, and invite people to join in. If they come for the contest,
they might just come back for the rest of it, too.
Even if you only do a few of these things, your
traffic is sure to increase. Don't forget to add a counter to your
page so you can see the numbers grow!
