Field Mill The club is anticipating the refurbishment of Field Mill into a 10,000 all-seater stadium. Both goalmouth ends of the ground have been cordoned off, but at the time of writing (April '99) work has not commenced. ![]() Mansfield Town Football Club spent their first season as tenants of Field Mill in 1919-20, and have been playing there ever since. By the time the Popular Stand was opened in 1927 (replaced in 1966 by the current West Stand) the site had already been in use as a sporting venue for more than 70 years. Claim to fame... It is not widely known that Mansfield Town and Field Mill pioneered the playing of floodlit football. A 1930 game between two local sides was played at Field Mill, the programme stating 'by aid of artificial light'. Special arrangements were made for the provision of electricity, and 6,000 people turned up to watch, among them representatives of several top sides and officials from the new Wembley Stadium. Though Field Mill in its heyday had crowd figures on occasion reaching close to 25,000 people, the ground today is clearly showing its age. The move to a new stadium is seen as essential if the club is to survive into the next century, as the new, stringent laws governing football stadia mean that overhaul of the ground to meet new standards is beyond the means of the club. Current plans are for the club to redevelop Field Mill, having purchased the freehold and providing a refurbished, 10,000 seater stadium. The main (West) stand will have 3 tiers, and both goal ends will accomodate 2,500 fans apiece. |
