What can be said about the great Andre the Giant
that has not already been said. A true giant, Andre suffered from gigantism,
which grew his body to titanic proportions. Well over 7 feet tall, Andre
could have been a vicious bruiser in the ring, but he was one of the kindest,
most gentle men ever in the sport.
Andre was born in France and was spotted by a talent
scout, who brought him to Canada to wrestle. Andre's size made him an instant
star. He toured throughout Canada, including the Stampede area, and eventually
into the States, where he would become a superstar.
Andre lost to Hulk Hogan in a memorable match in
1988. At this time, Andre's health was deteriorating rapidly, to the point
where it became difficult to move. Andre continued to wrestle for a few
more years, then retired.
Andre passed away on January 29th, 1993.
