Dear Mr. Vandelac:

I am writing to request that the STM post "Stand right, walk left" signs - or a reasonable alternative - on all Métro station escalators on the Island of Montreal.

As a regular Métro user, I am frequently annoyed by inconsiderate users who stand on the left side of transit system escalators. In most parts of the world, it is customary to stand on the right side of an escalator so as to allow others to walk on the left side. Although many Montrealers know the custom and stand according, the custom is not known many other of their fellow residents. And since it only takes one person to block the path of everyone else, it is imperative that signs be installed to sensitize all Montrealers to the global escalator-sharing custom.

Signs similar to the ones I am proposing exist in London, Amsterdam, Zurich, Edmonton, and Toronto, to name just a few cities. In those places, people have been educated about the escalator-sharing custom and abide by it. Those who do not are reminded by other users who can simply point to the sign.

Sharing an escalator is a common courtesy, no different from sharing an highway. Just as slow traffic must keep to the right of our roads, so too must escalator riders. Remember, those who choose to stand on an escalator will continue to have that option. But those who wish to walk should, too, have that option.

Changing customs is not an overnight event. Just as the the city is now sensitizing residents to respect the global crosswalk custom, so too must the city sensitize residents to the global escalator-sharing custom.

I hope the STM joins these cities in establishing proper escalator etiquette for the benefit of all Métro users.

Sincerely,
