Misguided McGuinty's Millennial Meltdown: Gilchrist

Steve Gilchrist, MPP
Scarborough East

Scarborough East MPP Steve Gilchrist says the year 2000 provided plenty of proof that Dalton McGuinty is a weak leader who's just not up to the job.

"Mr. McGuinty's gyrations to the beat of union leaders' directions - in so many areas, including our children's education and his opposition to proven welfare reforms -- reminds me of those dancing Santas on display in department stores," said Gilchrist (see backgrounder).

Gilchrist added, "Mike Harris has worked hard and demonstrated strong leadership in balancing the budget, cutting taxes to create jobs, investing in health care and education, and creating safer communities. And we recognize there is much more to do for our hard-working Ontario families. In contrast, Dalton McGuinty would raise taxes, kill jobs and our ability to fund health care and education, and drive away those who seek a better future for their families. We simply can't afford to let that happen."

A sampler of Dalton McGuinty's Liberals' Christmas 2000 "weak leadership gifts" to Ontarians:

Voted against tax cuts and a balanced budget - he still does not believe Ontarians should keep more of their own hard-earned money;
Voted against a resolution on the mandatory drug treatment of welfare recipients.
Demanded higher welfare payments;
Heeded the union bosses, voted against a bill to end a teachers' strike in Hamilton, despite repeated calls from parents and students for an end to the strike;
Voted to keep union bosses' salaries secret;
Recycled a three-year-old plan from the teacher union bosses that would do nothing to improve our children's education;
Voted against teacher testing resolution;
Refused to stand up for Ontario and ask his federal Liberal cousins to give this province its fair share of health care funding, extensions of the 407 and Red Hill Creek Expressway into Hamilton.
Refused to support a Mid (Niagara) Peninsula Highway.
Voted to support illegal drug use by Ontario prisoners;
Refused to support a bill intended to strengthen victims' rights and give them a greater role in parole hearings.
Fear-mongered about alleged "Americanization" of health care and education in Ontario, while he: called for U.S.-style fixed terms in office, lauded Arizona's internet voting system, and brought Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. to speak to Liberal faithful.
"Mike Harris is a strong leader who cuts taxes to create jobs and the economic growth we need to fund Ontarians' priorities, like quality education," says Gilchrist. "Dalton McGuinty has proven himself to be a weak leader who the union bosses play like a violin. Dalton McGuinty's plan for Ontario means higher taxes and fewer jobs. Heading into 2001, it's more apparent than ever that Dalton McGuinty is just not up to the job."
