Socialist Alliance Supports Manifesto for Council Housing

New Labour is pushing ahead with its proposals to privatise council housing - the 200,000 homes per year target (running for ten years) is contained in their manifesto. However, Labour are under massive pressure from their own core supporters - including MPs and Councillors - to invest in council housing. Providing decent, affordable, secure and accountable council housing has historically both been a core Labour objective and a source of Labour support. Selling off council houses is another sign of how far New Labour has accepted the Tories' big business agenda.

Defend Council Housing has produced an election briefing to back up the 'Manifesto for Council Housing' supported by the main tenants, trade union and campaign organisations nationally. The Socialist Alliance is backing this 'manifesto' and has signed up all candidates to it - further info at http://www.defendcouncilhousing.org.uk/.
