Some thoughts on Baptism from the book ARTICLES OF FAITH by James E Talmage in the year 1890
Dear Friend
My story of finding the Restored Gospel and a Priesthood that serves our Lord starts in July of 1996 in Windsor, Ontario Canada.
I never had been a member of any religious organization, but had frequented many churches and was very familiar with the scriptures. Those that took an interest in me, always presented the method of joining their organization was through Baptism. When I asked them for the prayer or words that would be used at the baptism, in every instance as an adult convert, these churches had a form of combined baptism/confirmation service that meant I could construe the words would mean that I would baptised into the Name of their Church rather than into the Body of Christ. This distinction stopped me from joining any church, because this was important to me.
Then on a Saturday evening about 8:30 p.m. in 1996 I met two angel's in the form of missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Early in that conversation they told me that I specifically would be baptised in the name of Jesus Christ; and then in another meeting, either the same day or at a latter date, I could choose to become a member of this church. They invited me to church the next day which was Sunday. I felt the spirit of God to be very strong in that congregation and have continued to go to church every sunday since; that was six years ago.
The angel's went by the names of Elder Brian Bradshaw from Wyoming, U.S.A. and his companion Elder Jon Orton from Arizona, U.S.A. These men had the spirit of God with them in this work and it gave them energy to do a marvelous work, under the guidance and supervision of Guardian Angel's in Toronto, Ontario by the name of President Paul & Sister Cheryl Sampson whom the Elders introduced to me in early September of 1996. On the 22nd. of September 1996 I was baptised in the Name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Master. Even though I am a sinner like everyone else, this organization has given me a method to serve the Lord in so many ways and with so many other people who are striving to slowly perfect there own lives. It seems so much easier to do it with a group of like minded people who have the same aim in life and we do not point a finger at each other when we fail, but rather lend a hand when asked. In life we either slowly slide down hill or we can make an effort to slowly improve ourselves and find a joy and peace within ourselves that is very comforting with every small step with which we progress.
I remain friends with these two missionaries that are excellent examples of the gospel of Jesus Christ which they taught, they each returned to a University and received Degrees. They married and each have a wonderful wife and each family has both a son and a daughter. They retain a strong interest and are active in this church as they go about their daily lives.
