LIEUTENANT DANICA KOS'TOV
Name: Danica Kos'tov Sex: Female Education History: Service History: Awards and Commendations: Personal History: Despite the Dakstri's best efforts however, underground movements formed not only pertaining to active resistance, but more passively to keep Lurenian traditions alive and well. Danica had become a member of this movement at the age of 12, serving as a scout with other children reporting the location of possible targets for the resistance. Unfortunately for Danica, it was one such covert 'mission' on which she was caught at the age of 15. The penalty for her crime was normally death, but the Dakstri required increasing amounts of slave labor to help produce the weapons and products the Empire required. As a result, she was given a 'generous' pardon and placed upon a transport that was supposed to be heading for the Dakstri Homeworld. Fortune is a fickle mistress however, and in this instance had opted to break surprisingly in Danica's favor after having consigned her to what would have been a cruel existence. As the Dakstri thirst for resources became greater and greater, so to did it's brazeness. They began striking out against their neighbors, including the fairly newly constructed colonies of the Confederacy of Allied Worlds, a peaceful and technologically advanced power. In reprisal for a raid the slave ship had participated in on one of the colonies, a warship intercepted the vessel, and after disabling it located it's 'cargo' of prisoners. The rest of the story is much a whirl to her, though official records do exist. Danica was granted refugee status, and taken to the primarily Stagnorian world of Al'Klei'sh. Danica was, given her age, granted the equivalent to emancipation, and given what was considered essential to life, education and peace as well as food, clothing, and shelter. She'd never before known such kindness or abundance. The testimony of the refugees helped convince the Confederacy's government that allowing the Dakstri Empire to continue occupying the former worlds of the Lurenians was unacceptable. With the Romulans, Klingons, Cardassians, and Dominion tied down along with the Federation in the Dominion War, a much less 'side' war began in an out of the way corner of the Quadrant. By 17, Danica had managed to catch up to the average for her age group... an exceptional feat given the amount of ground she had to cover and the fairly advanced nature of the education system she'd been thrown into. She took and passed the Basic Education Tests, scoring particularly well in the social and physical sciences. She was accepted for advanced full-time study at several Universities, but she felt she owed a debt to the people who treated her so well, and desired greatly to help her own people, still rebuilding from the occupation, a labor-intensive process even with the help of their liberators. Her decision was to join the military of the Confederacy of Allied Worlds, in hope that she might play some part in the reconstruction of her world... and would take what distance courses she could on the University level. She completed basic training with honors in marksmanship, and went on to more advanced training in Combat Engineering. Danica requested to be assigned to a unit, any unit, being dispatched to the Lurenian Homeworld. She found an open spot with a scouting element, however lacked the proper training for such an assignment. Fortunately she had time, and was able to apply to, and was accepted, to the Tactical Training College where she spent six months learning the arts of reconaissance, evasion, survival, stealth and camoflauge, small unit actions, and observation. Although she intended her time to be spent rebuilding infrastructure such as roads, bridges, hospitals, schools, and utilities (and did in fact end up doing a lot of that), her linguistic skills and intimate knowledge of the occupation lead her to being assigned in close association with a unit simply named the Special Crimes Investigation Unit. A mix of security, intelligence, and civilian personnel, the SCIU's assignment was to catalog the mounting evidence of war and humanitarian crimes on Lurenia by the now deposed Dakstri regime. Her intelligence and skill set which had come to include interrogations by now, impressed her supervisors greatly, and caught the eye of several of the agents from the Strategic Services Agency, the civilian, and primary, intelligence agency of the Confederacy. She found her tour uniquely rewarding, having found the opportunity to unite long-lost relatives, and grant closure to those families not so fortunate. The more she investigated the 150 year long occupation, and the more she learned about her people, the more 'whole' she felt herself. It allowed for a lot of personal resolution, including of hatred for those responsible, the latter arising from her tour on the Dakstri homeworld itself. When she had arrived, revenge was something she was looking forward to, but the few small skermishes in which she was involved proved to her that the Dakstri as a whole were not her enemy... in fact most were as much victims as she, forced to support an overgrown and demanding royalty and noble class. Things, as the Terran saying goes, are rarely what they seem... it was a lesson she learned the hard way. Exactly what brought about this epiphany or prompted this realization is a subject Danica remains very tight-lipped about, and a well guarded secret 'if' anyone else knows. When her unit's rotation ended at the end of 2378, Danica was approached by one of the intelligence agents she'd been working closely with, Braks U'kan... a gold-skinned Yeleni and member of the Strategic Services Agency. He asked her to consider joining the SSA, siting that her particular talents would be best utilized in the work of intelligence operations. It took several weeks for Danica to make up her mind, but finally she came to the conclusion that she was truly proud of the investigative work she'd done, and wanted to do more of it. Danica went to the elite Intelligence Services Academy for the academic training of intelligence gathering, and after graduation was promptly assigned to her first rotation, as a member of a Para-military response team. Her actual mission profiles and responsibilities are classified, though it's thought a safe assumption to believe her work may have included intelligence-gathering, cryptology, counter-intelligence, and the handling and extraction of human intelligence sources. Likewise, any and all actions following from this assignment are classified, though it is speculated that some of these mission included regular contact with Starfleet Intelligence It is known that in the 2380's, Starfleet is still rebuilding in many ways from the costs of the Dominion War, and looking forward to returning to it's core ideals of diplomacy and peaceful exploration. To that end, Starfleet has become an increasingly accepting place, opening up even to species outside of the Federation. Danica came to Starfleet in 2382 as an exchange officer, specializing in covert operations and counter-intelligence. There was an ongoing investigation into the disappearance of a Starfleet handler running operations within the Orion Syndicate. This was her lone prior assignment as a Starfleet officer and was based from the Nebula class starship Endeavor, all records of which are, as you might guess, classified. |
