Hello there! I'm Commander Max Simmons, the Chief Engineer
of Starbase Liberty. You've just ventured into one of the busiest,
noisiest and most interesting places of the entire base, and
that's including the Promenade when all the shops have a 50% off
sale. Down here in Engineering, we make sure that the Starbase
runs properly. We are constantly monitoring the reactor cores, the
power generators, life support systems, and countless other very
important systems. You name it, we keep track of it down here. We
work regularly with the science, security and operations
departments when we help create new sensors, modify force fields
and phaser banks, and recalibrate the docking bay tractor beams.
We have possibly the most important jobs on the base. Without us,
the main computer would not function properly and the base would
shut down.
But we aren't just limited to the Starbase, either. An
engineer is almost always included in an away mission, because you
never know when they might come in handy. Add to that a regular
shift on the U.S.S. Epimetheus, the base's starship, or perhaps
journeying down to the surface of Liberty II to assist in the
colonization of that world, and we keep pretty busy doing almost
everything. We offer assistance to any and all vessels that come
to Starbase Liberty, and because of this we meet new people every
time a ship does come in.
Our Engineering staff is made up of perhaps the finest in
the fleet. We are compromised of experienced, talented, and very
dedicated workers who can often be seen pulling two or three
consecutive shifts. We don't just hang out at work, though.
Engineering Office Parties take place once a month, usually at
Scotty's (engineers seem to favour Scotty's, we haven't figured
out why yet) and this close knit group of workers are often found
together outside of the work and parties. Think of us like the
Navy... we want you, and you want us too. So come on, join the
Engineering Department of Starbase Liberty!
Chief Engineer:
The Chief Engineer is the most senior engineer on
the Starbase. The Chief is responsible for the up-keeping of all the
base's systems, and works almost constantly with the other
department heads to make sure things do work properly. Some Chief
Engineer's take duty shifts at OPS, so they can monitor things from
there, while others choose to stay at the heart of the base, Main
Engineering. The Chief Engineer is well trained in nearly all types
of engineering, and does not specialize in any specific area.
Assistant Chief Engineer:
The Assistant Chief Engineer works with the Chief
Engineer. The Assistant Chief is the Chief's most trusted and most
senior engineer, and is responsible for reporting all faults in the
system to the Chief. The Assistant Chief Engineer also relays the
orders from the Chief to the Engineering staff, and normally is left
in command of Engineering if the Chief has to leave or is off-duty.
Engineering Specialist:
The Engineering Specialist is the pawn in the
Engineer's game of chess. The Specialist performs all the tasks that
the Chief and Assistant Chief are too busy to perform. They are the
ones responsible for most repairs, and are also the ones normally
monitoring the systems of the base. The Engineering Specialists work
all over the base, but normally start their day in Main Engineering,
where they receive their duties for the day and then go off to
perform them. Sometimes they work in groups, sometimes alone,
depending on the job and its requirements.
Reactor Engineering
Officer:
The Reactor Engineering Officer is the officer on
the Starbase responsible for making sure the Reactor Cores are
functioning properly. They report directly to the Chief Engineer, or
the command staff. They spend their entire shift monitoring and
adjusting the reactor core, and are specialists in their fields.
There are never enough of these important people, and the good ones
are gobbled up by the most senior base commander as soon as they
graduate from the Academy. This is a demanding, but extremely
important job. While most consider it a boring profession, all of
the engineers respect the people in this position, because they know
just how lucky they are to have specialists in reactors working with
them.
Damage Control
Specialist:
The Damage Control Specialist is a modern-day
Emergency Worker. These engineers are fire-fighters, paramedics,
and regular engineers. They undergo special training after their
Starfleet Academy graduation, and the profession is growing in
popularity. Growing up, all the children pretend to be Damage
Control Specialists, and the ones who do go on to be DCSs are
assured a job for life because of their importance. The DCS is
in charge of all minor repairs on the base that are inflicted
through an emergency. The major repairs are assigned to the
regular engineering staff.
Computer Engineer:
The Computer Engineer is responsible for the up-keeping
of the Starbase's computer systems. They are constantly evaluating
the efficiency of the computers, and upgrade them when need be. If
something happens in a Holodeck or in another computer-controlled
environment, a Computer Specialist is called in to help. These are
very important positions. The people who hold these positions are
well trained in all things technological, and frequently go on to be
high-ranking engineers at Starfleet Command.
Engineer's Mate:
The Engineer's Mate is the Chief Engineer's
personal assistant. The Engineer's Mate can be a commissioned
officer, a non-commissioned officer, or a cadet. They are
responsible for performing the Assistant Chief Engineer's tasks and
then some, because unlike the Assistant Chief Engineer the
Engineer's Mate usually winds up going along with the engineering
team to make the necessary repairs or adjustments to a system, while
the Chief and Assistant Chief monitor from Main Engineering. This is
a hectic job, with the Engineer's Mate being on-call twenty four
hours a day. If for some reason the Chief and Assistant Chief are
not available, the Engineer's Mate can assume command of Engineer if
they are a commissioned or non-commissioned officer and if the
commander of the base does not disagree. |
