The 187th MEU, formerly known as the 187th
Composite Regiment, and previously as the Liberty Marine Corps
Detachment was created shortly after the beginning of the Avalonian
War in response to numerous attacks and incidents aboard Starbase
Liberty, and it has been there ever since.
They are currently the only Marine Corps unit permanently
assigned to the Freedom Fleets area of operations (AO). The nearest
Marine Corps support is nearly 150 light-years away at Marine Corps
Station Sierra Rodani in the form of the 33rd Marine Infantry
Division.
The 187th is a self contained, mobile, and special
operations capable force of nearly 1000 Marines. It is separated
into two main groups, a Transport Ready Group (TRG), comprising
three Marine Corps Ships as well as several shuttles, landing craft
and a component of fighters, and a Land Force Command (LFC), which
is made up of an Armored Squadron, 3 Infantry Companies, a troop of
Field Engineers, 6 Mortar Teams, and a Support/HQ Company.
They stand ready to accept any mission at any time, and
are able to deploy an Immediate Reactionary Force (IRF) anywhere in
the AO (Area of Operations) within 8 hours, with the rest of the
unit able to respond within 32 hours. They stand at the very outer
edge of Federation territory as the first line of defense against
any aggressor. During times of peace the unit still stands at full
strength and goes through routine training when they are not
assigned a mission. They are an elite force which can carry out a
variety of missions ranging from Direct Action Operations (Sabotage,
Espionage, Abduction/Arrests, Reconnaissance in support of a larger
campaign) and Prisoner Extraction, to Interdiction, to Hazmat and
relief operations as well as the traditional Marine roles of
carrying out planetary patrols, basing operations, embassy/consulate
security and combat ops.
Here are some general facts about the unit:

MEU Commander:
Description
MEU Executive
Officer:
Description
Armor Officer:
These are the Tank commander of the 187th. They
command the tanks, artillery and recon vehicles that are so vital to
the success of any ground engagement. They must be proficient in
communications, weapons operations and vehicle driving.
Infantry Officer:
The Platoon Lieutenants of the Infantry. The core
leaders of the MEU, to be an infantry officer in the Marines you
must be tough, smart and able to take on anything. An infantry
officer must know how to lead his men, use strategy and tactics, and
close with and destroy the enemy. Infantry Officers receive quicker
promotions then any other officer in the Marines.
Engineering Officer:
There's only one in a MEU, and he/she commands the
Engineers troop. They are the Marine Equivalent of the Starfleet
Operations Officer. They must know everything about everything. And
they have to be able to fix anything under any circumstance. The
Engineering Officer of the MEU is also responsible to advise the
Command staff about anything in his field that they may encounter.
Medical Officer:
The CMO of the MEU works along side the other 2 or
3 Field Surgeons in the Medical Squad. They are also responsible for
the two dozen corpsman and medics that are deployed in the field.
They are the devil docs, saving life wherever it needs to be saved.
Naval Officer:
The TRG Officers are the equivalent of the
Starfleet Officers about Starships. The difference is in the
uniforms and the fact that most Naval Officers do the job of two 'Fleeters'
(IE, a Marine Officer on the Marine Ship would do the jobs of a
Starfleet Chief Engineer and Comm O, or double as the XO and
Helmsman). The reason for the increased workload is valid though
considering the Marine needs smaller crews on their ships to allow
for more troops and they don't usually work as constantly as
Starfleet Officers.
Infantry/Armor/Engineering
Non-Commissioned
Officer (NCO):
These are the Combat Arms mid-level leadership.
They run the day to day operations/training undertaken by the unit.
They are responsible FOR the vast number of troops in the MEU and
they are responsible TO the Officers of the MEU. They hold all the
mid level positions in the Armored Squadron, and Infantry Battalion,
and literally are the binding force inside the units.
Support Non-Commissioned
Officer (NCO):
The career Sgt's. Drill Instructor, Weapons
Trainer, Cooks, Mechanics and Computer Tech and Intel Analysts. They
are the former Combat Arms NCO's who have either grown out of the
lust for battle or have grown to weary of it. They do the dirty jobs
that no one appreciates, but at the same time, they keep everyone
else on their feet through the tough and the tedious.
Shipboard Non-Commissioned
Officer (NCO):
The section leaders command the riflemen in the
field, and the Boatswains 'Bosuns' lead the shipboard marine crews.
They are the warp core and computer technicians and Masters at Arms
(MAA's, the Marine equivalent of a Security Deputy) onboard the
marine vessels. They pride themselves in being more disciplined
their Starfleet counterparts.
Medical Non-Commissioned
Officer (NCO):
The Medics, Corpsman and Stretcher-bearers of the
187th are the men and women who are owed lifetimes over and over
again by anyone wounded in the units missions. They are the first
line of the medical treatment and the most important people in that
chain. They are responsible for field triage and treatment, and also
the transport of the dead and wounded back to the Aide Station/Field
Hospital/Medical Center.
Privates and Corporals:
The grunts. The backbone of the Marines, each
having gone through basic training and being trained in their
designated specialty. They are the troops of the line, living in
barracks with their peers and serving under all. The unsung heroes
of any battle. The Rifleman, or driver, or gunners mate that 'gets
the job done', and never ceases to march on.
