Here's something Weyrwoman Beka came up with to help members visualize what Starfire
Weyr looks like
THE WEATHER
The Weyr region is temperate in climate. Hot in summer, and ususally cold, sometimes is surprisingly bone-numbingly freezing in winter. Summers are dry and very hot. Monsoons come during the later summer months, sometimes lasting into the early winter months. Winter is cold, though snow sometimes doesn't fall until mid-winter in the lower altitudes.
LOCATION:
Starfire Weyr is located on the Northern Continent, near where Keroon is, but a little farther up and to the left. (Since we can’t use the Hold or Weyrs from the books, I just wanted to give you all a good visualization of where Starfire would be on the Northern Continent). Amid the mountains and hilly plains a distance away from the Weyr, is the Table Mesa, a large red stone mesa that's used as a weyrling training point while they're learning to go between.
THE WEYR:
Starfire is located in a volcano crater like all other Weyrs. It's large and spacious. The beastherds are large and the Weyrlake deep and wide- perfect for bathing dragons. The Star Stones are on the eastern Rim of the Weyr, with the Weyrwoman and Weyrleader’s weyrs facing them.
The Hatching Gounds/Dining Caverns/Kitchen:
The Hatching Gounds are fancy, but not overly so, with five massive tiered seating levels to accommodate the Candidates’ parents, , Holders, Crafters and those that wish to witness a Hatching. These tiers ring the Sands, forming a semicircle and the cavern itself is quite large. Directly to the right of the Grounds is the entrance to the Lower Caverns, which leads into the Kitchen and vaulted Dining Caverns. The Dining Caverns can also be reached by the straight passage in the Hatching Grounds, for ease of feeding the esteemed Hatching Guests and those newly Impressed.
The weyrs:
All the Queens’ weyrs have a large, separate chamber off to the side of the dragons’ sleeping chamber that serves as the sleeping chamber for the rider and are equipped with service shafts and a separate room that contains the bathing pools, complete with changing partion to the side of the bathing pool room. Hot water is piped into these large bathing pools via both metal and clay pipes. The stone couches that the dragons use are covered with a large bag of rushes and furs. The most elaborate of these weyrs being the Senior Weyrwoman Beka’s weyr, which also has two or three high-quality tapestries hanging upon the walls and a polished stone table, drawers and a desk. Pegs on the wall by her queen’s sleeping chamber are for Lisanth’s flying straps. The Weyrleader’s weyr as well as the rest of the riders' weyrs also have bathing pools, while they might not be as fancy as the Weyrwoman's or Weyrleader's.
