Chevrons and Glyphs

So what exactly are Chevrons and Glyphs? Well...

Chevrons are the nine triangular (for the lack of a better word) 'things' positioned at 40 degree angles around the gate.  Seven Chevrons are needed to lock before a wormhole can be established but in 'The Fifth Race' Jack got 8 chevrons to lock. Carter realised this added extra distance to the wormhole. No function for the ninth Chevron has been discovered. Each glyph entered using the DHD is locked in by a chevron; the address for each Stargate has seven glyphs, hence the use of seven chevrons.

Glyphs are the 39 small symbols on the inner circle of the Stargate. 38 of these symbols are common to every Stargate but there is one symbol unique to each Stargate, this is the Point of Origin.
