The graveyard grass was still wet with dew and the sun hadn't yet risen over the mountains, creating an eerie pre-dawn stillness, which frightened most creatures away. A solitary figure walked slowly and sadly, his pant legs soaked through from the wetness on the ground and his expression as cold as the air. He stared straight ahead with a dead gaze and though his tall body still held the presence of authority, the toll taken by years of pain were evident.

Reaching his destination he stiffly kneeled down before the tombstone and silently stared at it. He pulled an old, wrinkled piece of paper from his pocket. It was a note which had been slipped under his door ions ago, before it was too late. Slowly he read the words on it for the last time:

"Did you swallow your pride,
And look her in the eye
Tell her that you lover her
Tell her that you need her
Tell her that you want her to stay
Reassure her with a kiss
She may never know
Unless you show her what you're feeling
Tell her that you're believing
Even though it's hard to say
Cause she needs to know you're thinking of her
So open up and tell her that you love her"
Setting the note on top of the tombstone along with a single red rose he carried, he ran his fingers over the engraved name "Samantha Carter" and began to cry.

"Sam… I know it's too late, but I have to tell you that I love you," Jack whispered, before burying his head in his hands and surrendering to the emptiness within him.
